I seem to remember a time in the far distant past, perhaps it was in the last Millenium, when he might have been funny. Maybe it was my meds. ***************************** "Publish, and be damned!" said the Duke of Wellington. |

I don't think he was ever funny, mildly amusing, sometimes very amusing, but not what I would call funny. Robin Williams, John Cleese, they can be funny. |

Same here, John. I even once owned a 'Late Night with David Letterman' sweat t-shirt 20+ years ago, but like you said, that was when the old man was on top of his game. All I can think of when reading this story is the quote from Jay Leno to actor Hugh Grant, when the latter appeared on 'The Tonight Show' after his rather embarassing "streetside quickie": 'What the hell were you thinking?" Eclectic Wave – John Cleese for sure. |

It was, no doubt, his consolation prize for not getting the Tonight Show. Obviously, it didn't work but it felt good enough that he did it again, and again, and

If any TMPers are making millions doing better comedy, I am unaware of it. The corporations broadcast what the public likes to watch. |

The "public" have a renowned lack of taste if you doubt that just look at whats offered as entertainment throughout the media. |

The letter told Letterman that his world was "about to collapse around him" when information about his private life is disclosed. He said it would lead to "a ruined reputation" and severe damage to his professional and family life. Who on earth would think that Letterman would care? It's not like he's running for office or something

They are doing a real bang up job of it too. Didn't you get the Memo, Allen? We are TMP, and mentally superior to the mere mortals known as "the public". |

Oh, I see all the wailing about some things. But I note too that "American Idol" seems sacrosanct, which seems hypocritical, if not simply daft. |

I like that he dealt with it in a pretty direct and open way. I still find him entertaining
not as funny as I used to, which I partially blame on his move to an earlier time slot. Heck, now my mom watches him. Nowadays Craig Ferguson is the one who I'll stay up for
he makes me laugh. |

I couldn't believe that the studio audience was laughing as he was telling/confessing his story. I suppose that they thought it was part of a joke or something. I notice that Letterman didn't apologize to his "partners". What a self centered low life he is. I'll give him a little credit for fessing up, although he probably figured that it was better to tell on himself rather than wait for the press to get ahold of the story. |

"I notice that Letterman didn't apologize to his "partners"." Since such public celebrity apologies are seen as worth less than the videotape they are recorded on, and he didn't give any names at all, this may have been the better way to go. At least one story I've seen suggests that some investigation into the actual events will occur, so the less said now the better. If the women want an apology from Dave, we WILL hear about it. The Internet guarantees it. This was, as John notes above, the 'Publish, and be Damned!' part of the process. |

But I note too that "American Idol" seems sacrosanct, which seems hypocritical, if not simply daft. Oh, it's not sacrosanct. I just get sick of guys who have to jump in and tell us all how superior they are to all of us who enjoy the show, and take it for what it is. So, those of use who watch it and enjoy it simply lay down a mine field, to preempt the superior know it alls who want to tell us what idiots we are for enjoying it. |

Why would he apologize to his "partners"? |
