When burying a loved one at sea, it is important to consider the direction of the wind before releasing the ashes.

Allegedly occurring on one of the Washington State Ferries:

"On Wednesday night, on my nightly commuter run back from Seattle, I was sitting in the booth in the galley, reading my book, when over the loudspeaker came the following message: "To those poor individuals who just tried to bury their ancestor at sea, the ashes blew back inside the boat, and all the cars on the car deck are now covered with the remains of your ancestor. Next time, please contact us before you scatter the ashes so we can give them a proper burial. Thank You."

That happened to me once when I was in the Navy. The base commander accepts ashes from people who want their loved ones buried at sea. Every few months a ship going out for a short shakedown or training cruise will be given the collected boxes of ashes for burial. The Captain reads the traditional service, honors are rendered, a rifle salute fired and the ashes dumped. The whole thing is video taped for the families. The only problem is that while the skipper is on the stern officiating the service, the most junior Ensign is conning the ship…

Yeah you guessed it, the genius didn't think to keep the bow into the wind, so that all of us on the helo deck in our dress whites got covered in ash. It took me a week to get the taste out of my mouth.

My first thought as well. Hopefully the recently deceased was a Cohen Brothers fan and could appreciate the humor.
