My daughter is my whiz kid. Goes the the better colleges, studies over seas and, up until now, has pulled in major scholarship money.

Then she switched her field of interest from foreign relations to Economics. Spent a year doing nothing but math (which cost me a bit) and worked on an economics paper with a local economist that was published earlier this year (with her name on it).

Then she started applying to PhD programs in Economics. This was tough. I guess they just don't even consider people for these programs unless they major in Economics or Math as an undergrad. Quite often she was told she was absolutely NOT qualified; she shouldn't even consider applying -- this included professors at the University of Oregon.

It was looking like I was going to have to come up with about 20K a semester (in addition to her taking out 30K a semester in loans) for her to participate in a 5 year PhD program.

Today, out of the blue !!!!! She was offered a fellowship, full tuition waiver, heath insurance, dental insurance, and an annual stipend of $14,500.00. Thank you University of Oregon!!!

My bank account may have just improved by 40K for the next 12 months -- assuming she takes it.

Keep you fingers crossed for me. (Nope, this decision is not an automatic. This kid is pretty discriminating -- has walked away from a 'full scholarship' before because it didn't lead where she wanted to go.)

Moral of the story:

Don't give up, don't quit, just keep after it. Half of success in life is just showing up.

I know exactly how you feel and I hope some money comes through for my son. Oh, good luck by the way.

That is a major achievement. Plus, I understand the economists are regarded as the most-promising (and well-paid) profession for the next decade. It's a great time to be an economist!

Just make sure she does become friends with a beach bum in Fort Lauderdale.

Congratulations to the two of you. Graduate school without a stipend is a tough row to how.

Congratulations to you both and a big well done to her!

Well turned out to be a mixed bag.

The "fellowship" is for a single semester.

It appears she will be working for a couple of professors. One of them is the guy that said she wasn't qualified. Just gets curiouser and curiouser.

Could be testing her mettle but this is an expensive way to conduct a test of this nature.

Looks like she will be grading tests and 'counseling' (whatever that is) to earn her keep.

She says she has a solution to the economic down-turn. Since economists are pessimistic about the economy and this seems to be creating uncertainty which in turn is impeding the recovery, she proposed that we should all give her lots of money, which would make her very optimistic and she would then spread her optimism . . . which ultimately would put the world economy back on track. :P

Hey at least I'm off the hook for a semester. Cannot say I'm as optimistic as she. I'm going to save my nickels and dimes just in case.

Almost enough to get into W40K. grin

Oh well. Better than nothing, and it may turn into a longer gig.

I think her solution to the economic downturn is called 'stimulus' and they're already trying it. You just have to be a bank or car maker to qualify.
