Oh, be ye *not* joyful. Looks like Disney bought Tim Powers: link The story is good. Inserting Captain Jack Sparrow into it is madness. Allen |

I hope Powers got a LOT of money for it, and was not ripped off in the time honored traditional way. |

How would Hollywood rape "The Drawing of the Dark"? |

I've always thought Tim Powers books could make great films [The Anubis Gates anyone??] but
shudder

One of the comments below the article claims that Powers is working with Disney on the film, rather than having just sold them the rights. Might smooth things out a bit. Having read On Stranger Tides, I don't think the book is filmable (straight, at least)— the ending is particularly bizarre. So in this case, mixing it with the PotC franchise to produce a more audience-palatable production might actually work out okay. Or it could stink worse than At World's End. . . though that would be hard to do. |

I just happened to be there at the D23 talk and it was BEYOND RAD! The crowd went nuts. But the funny thing was it was announced at the very end of that session, and more than 2/3rds of the people left early, so they missed it. After it was announced (and word got out) people FLOODED back into the auditorium. But it was the few folks who stayed the entire time who got to do a meet and greet with Depp afterwords. I got a few pics of him and my wife. I am really excited about this for sure! BTW
they also had more info on Tron 2 and The Lone Ranger (Depp has officially signed on as Tonto), as well as a few new others ( Toy Story 3, Old Dogs, and some other cartoon stuff
) Oh, and Pixar's John Carter of Mars in 2012.

After a quick hunt around
link It looks like it will be based on the book, as the author mentioned it at a different convention

. A fan on the Lucasarts messageboards says that he met Powers earlier in the year at a convention, and that the author told him he'd signed the book over to Disney on the proviso that he got to be an extra in the movie (that and a fat wad of cash, we'd assume). Dude, you didn't think to mention this earlier?! Hey, if Powers is OK with it, so am I. It IS his property after all. I am reminded of the TV version of Treasure Island with Charlton Heston as Long John Silver. His son was the director and producer. "Uh, Dad? I have a part I would like you to read for
" Who could turn it down? It seems that Powers is not quite as protective of his baby as we are. As regards my posts above, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. |

I've only seen the first POTC movie
so maybe, if this one forgets to suck, I can skip over the middle two and never feel the pain. |

Drawing of the Dark is one of the few fantasy novels I have read twice. It would make a great movie without changing a thing: characters, plot, dialogue, action, the works
