My son went to this movie in Russia this weekend because he really wanted to go to it after seeing all the previews. Since my wife thought it was just a cartoon movie she agreed. For all the handwringing in reviews about this being too frightening for children, my son begs to differ. His comment was "…it's not scary, it's just sad that's all." He's six. Your child's sensibilities may vary, but he really enjoyed it. He understood what 'souls' were, told me which automatons died, could tell me about the evil robots stealing souls etc. It ain't Wall-E, but it does have the Fascisti as bad guys – can't go wrong there!
And I'll tell you it wasn't nazi death machines that scared the crap out of me at 6 years old it was 'Bill and Ben the Flower Pot Men' – like freakin' triffids, or those sea dudes from Dr Who….Anyway, sounds like a good graphic novel adaptation of an Appocalypse story without the enormous eyes, pink hair, school outfits and incomprehensible plot lines.

We saw it last week when it came out. Your wife probably should have looked into it more – I don't think it's really a kids' movie. Certainly not recommended for a 6 year old.

This has nothing to do with the old Mark Ryden video game 9… right?

Did not see the movie so don't know about the video game. As I said, I probably would not have taken him, but he did enjoy the movie and was pretty enthusiastically telling me about it -for a good 20 mins – (thank god for calling cards and/or Skype!). As I said, different children, different sensibilities. He still likes the tamer Disney/Pixar and PBS kids stuff, Nu Packadi, Shariki, lunetic [Russian children cartoons] and still reads Richard Scarry, Backyardigans and Little Einsteins, but also likes Star Wars, Russian epics (Kniaz Vladimir etc.) and some Japanese anime. He tells me if he thinks something will be too scary or adult for him. And no, the inmates don't run the assylum, he's ok with my final say.
