Why didn't Spock just teach this to the rest of the crew in a martial arts class or something? It could have come in handy from time to time.

Remember the old Saturday Night Live skit in the first season with John Belushi as Kirk and Chevy Chase as Spock. The network executives come onto the set to cancel the show and Chase/Spock is trying to pinch the shoulder of the executive and is wondering why this doesn't work.

It's a Vulkin thing, you wouldn't understand…..

IIRC the original nerve pinch required Vulcan telepathy to work, but later writers ignored that and gave everybody access to the trick. Several non Vulcans like Data could do it …

You need that extra muscle in your hand to make it work properly?

Remember Kirk saying somthing like "I wish you could teach me that", where Spock replied "I have tried captain."

From what I remember, it required a working knowledge of the various humanoid nervous systems and the strength of a Vulcan at a minimum. Which explains why Data could do it, after being shown by a Vulcan HOW to do it.

I like the Space Balls version.

I like the time when dr mccoy tried to do it.

It would appear that it is largely a combination of manual strength and anatomical knowledge (in canon) as several non-Vulcans have been taught, but Mc Coy couldn't do it even while "possessed" by Spock.

There are, of course, exceptions link
