I was reading the Prometheus fanfic on their website.

I must say it is well written and has some very solid characters, and some clever links to the series etc. This is riveting stuff and the atmosphere is great.

The site has some rave reviews and I wonder if they are aware that most of the story was lifted from another property ???

SPOILERS

What I really didn't like was the way they ripped of Battletech and Renegade Legion ….

MAJOR SPOILERS !!!!

They send out a SUPER battlestar with a full escort to find Kobol and Earth shortly before the Cylons attack. This is a no-go taught in Fanfics 101, IE my characters are better/stronger than the real ones with super ships and super powers and better at everything. Battlestar Prometheus is a textbook example of this.

As you read you start to notice some really odd mentions of Heat Sinks, Naval Autocannons or NAC10's, vibroswords, TAG and a host of terms that will sound very familiar to anybody who ever played Battletech.

The bad guys in Season 1 are Comstar, the Clans and TOG rolled into one. Divided in Warden and Crusader factions, some wanting to exterminate the twelve colonies, the other believe it should be protected …

If this can pass as top-rated fan fiction worthy of praise, I'm going to throw my word processor into the trashcan because I don't steal other people's work and ideas that openly.

And it seems the main protagonist is getting the emissary treatment from Deep Space Nine. Did you know there is a Trek Defiant fanfic on the site as well ??? I wonder why ???

I've read some bad fiction in my day and here is a clearly talented writer who uses copy and paste instead of getting his own ideas. I bet he is a huge fan of the Shannara series.

The Deep Space Nine Emissary being of course, remarkably similar to Sinclair in Babylon5

I don't get how he can be simultaneously a great writer and a hack who steals liberally from other sources. I don't care how well somebody can turn a phrase-- if he is stealing plot ideas and such he is NOT "talented".

I'm not an expert and I don't play one on TV, but aren't most Sci-Fi (Sy Fy?) and Fantasy plots derivitive?
