I have a serious question, but as it contains reference to – ahem – Last Hussar's 'sabre' you may wish to consider whether this is a thread you want your wife or servants to see. * * * Last chance to click the back button * * * Okay. Last Thursday we visited the Science Museum, and one of the exhibits was a high resolution thermal imager camera, showing 'live' pictures of the visitors. You could make out the eyes, nose etc, and if you pressed your hand against your shirt you could see the hand print after you moved it (apparently it was not the heat from the hand printed on, but rather where the air had been pushed out). I could actually make out my wedding ring- not bad as the camera was 7 feet away. However I suddenly noted a 'hot spot' on the inside thigh of my jeans. It turned out my penis was a hotter shade than the rest of my leg where it rested, and the end was the hottest part. Yes, the crotch was hotter, but there was a definate hotter area actually associated with 'the old chap' compared to the leg upon which it rested- especially as I say the end. Is this normal? It wasn't filled with blood, as it were, so why so much warmer. |

Would you rather it were colder? |

Probably simple position. With two large arteries running through the junction of the legs, that area tends to show fairly warm to begin with. Add the always close clothing and the act of walking, and friction drives up the temp even more. Lastly, the entire area has a high sweat gland count, and is thus better at venting heat from inside the body. Why is Hussar Jr. hotter than even all that? Ask a doctor. |

I'm guessing "less insulation" (less fatty tissue) compared to the leg. |

I don't know why, but this topic reminds me of a quote from an X-Files episode, where they had to undress to show they were not infected with a parasite: Mulder – "Before anyone passes judgment, may I remind you, we are in the Arctic" CC |

Ambient body heat depends on mass and blood flow. While your leg is more massive there is relatively less blood per tissue amount compared to the scrotum. So, yes, the scrotum should be hotter. However, it should be slightly cooler than the ambient temperature of the torso. Why? Because, due to a weird quirk of evolution, spermatogenesis works better at a few degrees below body temperature. That's why we have a scrotum dangling from the body. It's to cool down. Ralph |

There's always pretty high blood flow, even when flaccid. Not much insulation, either. -Kle. |
