This police scam has been used numerous times. I'm surprised that it still works, but then, considering who the targets are, maybe not.

If it works that well, I expect the legal profession to come up with a way to attack it (they're always on the lookout for more work)….

This is an old tactic. The police have used a variant of the "Kenyan Scam" sending letters to various addresses associated with felons explaining that they won somthing, or that they have a re-bate from old taxes or some other scam.

It may be an old tactic, but it works.
Unfortunately, it may have some Darwinian side effects, in that it removes the really dumb Bad Guys from circulation, but lets the smart ones go.

Now if we could only come up with a similar sting for all of the corrupt politicians we have here in Illinois (in both parties).
