Do they sell cars that have just one speed? I ask because AGAIN today I get caught behind someone doing 45-50 in a 60, then when we enter a 40, and I slow, pulls away from me. |

My father-in-law, upon his last trip to visit boasted 40mpg from his Toyota Matrix. The trick, he said, was to drive 10 miles under the speed limit at all times. obviously it was he. |

What is really anoying is when you find someone doing 70 in a 100kph zone who speeds up to take the corner that recomende you slow to 80 at 80 and then slows to 70 again. Robert |

My pet peeves? People who roar up behind you and then just sit back in your blind spot when you pull over to let them pass (Oh, sorry, I didn't want to pass, really, I just wanted to inhale your fumes). People who toodle along at speed X while you slowly gain on them from the rear, but when you pass them they suddenly decide they need to speed up. Trucks doing X.000001 mph who feel obliged to pass a truck going "only" X mph, on a two lane highway. Half an hour later they finish passing and the 53 cars lined up behnd them shout 'Huzzah!'. Sorry, Last Hussar, this is your rant but I feel so much better now. |

They call it "cruise control". It's often used by the sort of people who also use automatic headlights and windshield wipers, that I tend to think should be riding the bus, instead. I don't really see where you have grounds to complain (though it's annoying to be trapped behind someone going slower than you want). 45 in a 60 is generally legal, and once they started speeding, they were no longer in your way. -Kle. |

Cruise control – that would explain it. But who uses cruise control on a single carriageway road? The driver was obviously a complete muppet! |

I use cruise control everyday on my way to work. Speed limit is 65 MPH. I set it at 70 MPH and have not got a ticket yet. This was after the nice man in A uniform told me I was blasting past him everyday and he didn't think it was right. |

I don't think it was cruise control- it was one of those minor 'A' roads where you have to slow a little for bends, and I was watching my speedo, we gained, then as we approached the heady speeds of 50 nerves took over and we slowed. It was only partially the slow (though this can be deemed illegal if you are holding up traffic, and you may get a bored copper pull you and check you are not over the limit, and/or give you a talking to, as there is a 'consideration' part to the traffic acts), but the fact she was doing 50 in a 40. I'm with Cerdic on this one. |

I *have* used my turn signal to encourage people behind me to speed up, because letting someone pass in front of your car is apparently an unforgiveable affront to manliness. :) The thing I don't get is this, which has happened to me more than one time. I'm on a long-ish (multi-hour) trip on a highway with my cruise control set at a comfortably too-fast level. I'm in the right lane since I don't want to go more than 10mph over :). The road has two lanes going my direction, so common courtesy is for slower traffic to stay right. A car zooms up behind me, hovers for a while at a very close distance, then finally decides to go over to the fast lane to pass me, which is a sensible if not belated action. But that's not the weird part – they get up level with my car, slow down, then fall back into my blind spot. What could possibly be their motivation? Do they think I have some sort of radar detector or something? I don't, and I don't have any high-tech looking things attached to my dashboard or windshield. If they just wanted a pace car, they could have stayed behind me. My car is not large, so they could see around/over me with little trouble. Sometimes, after a few minutes they'll speed up again. Sometimes we'll catch up to another blob of cars and that will force a change in our formation. |

Usually when someone is doing something irretrievably stupid, I look to see if they're holding a cell phone. They usually are. |

"People who toodle along at speed X while you slowly gain on them from the rear, but when you pass them they suddenly decide they need to speed up." One of the local routes is one lane each way with occasional passing lanes. I've been trapped behind drivers who doddered along below the posted, stacking up cars behind them, only to speed up like demons to "own" the passing lanes and keep anyone from passing them and then slow down again when the road dropps back to a single lane. And they wonder why road rage is so common

Boasting 40mpg? :o It's the actual rev's and not the speed that affects the consumption, Raven, better tell that your father-in-law. If I keep the rev's under 2.4k, my Audi A3 1.9TDi gets about 55mpg
But I rarely get above 30mpg. And I'm never the first car in the head of the queue, rarely even the 2nd |
