My older brother likes to watch the Travel Channel, and on some of their shows, I've noticed that the host will visit some dive that serves items topped with a fried egg, like a sandwich. Is there a story behind this practice? Also, if anyone here has a personal story, what main courses have you eaten that was topped off with a fried egg?

Thank you.

Pizza in Italy. Although I think it was a boiled egg.

What haven't I eaten with a fried egg (or poached)?

Salad, sandwich, soup, burger, pizza, noodles, steak, french fries, broccoli, cauliflower, burritos, casseroles, potatoes, pasta, sauteed vegetables, etc.

I think eggs are the world's most perfect food.

We always have eggs in the house, farm fresh when I can get them. In fact, when we're out of dog food, Crumpet quite enjoys sharing scrambled eggs with me for dinner.

The Holstein schnitzel is a Wiener schnitzel with a fried egg on top. Mighty tasty. Waiter, I'll have that with extra cholesterol on the side. No restaurant in this one-time 'rye bread' town makes a decent schnitzel any more, they all try to pass pork off as schnitzel…grumble…

Crumpet! I love that dog… just based on her name and her picture… I wanna hear more tales about Crumpet!

Eggs easy protein and good on anything--yes anything!

Venus – I'm quite attached to Crumpet! I put a recent photo on my profile. She might be small, but all muscle. I'm going on vacation so I think Crumpet and I might celebrate our last dinner together (as she's staying with friends) with a meal of sausage and eggs.

Corned Beef Hash with a fried egg on top is probably my favorite.

That is about my wife's favorite breakfast, CLDISME…

Pizza in Germany.

Pizza with an egg on it in the UK. Birmingham, to be precise.

They will put eggs on anything.

An Aussie Pizza is a pizza with egg. Common all over Australia. Similarly an Aussie Burger is a burger with bacon, beetroot, and egg. Available at McDonalds and Burger King in Australia (Burger King is known as Hungry Jack's).

On another vein my Grandfather server in the British army in India. Apparently during his time there he only ate eggs and steak -- avoiding anything cooked locally. (Eggs cant be grown with human manure!). For the rest of his life if we went to a Chinese or Indian restaurant we had to make sure they could cook him an egg.

Indonesian food is often topped with a fried egg. Spicy dry noodles with meat or whatever, topped with a fried egg. Very yummy.

I like it so the white is firm but the yolk is still partly runny. It makes a wonderful sauce for the noodles.

Bi-Bim-Bob! Korean dish that I must make 10 times a day when I am at the restaurant.

It's an almost universal thing: maybe Eskimos don't do it!

Unfortunately, it has suddenly become "trendy":

Forget the trendiness, and just go with it. It's authentic in most cuisines, as in the examples everyone has provided.

Once again, nycjadie, thanks for Michel Roux's "Eggs"!

Pizza with fried eggs as a topping?? This could take some getting used to, since the meat toppings, not to mention the cheese, makes me feel "dirty" enough, already! evil grin

Fascinating how most of the world has at least one dish with a fried egg topping, which does, as Allen points out, seems to be heading toward "trendy" status. As we Americans like good old fashioned sandwiches, I now realize the natural adaptation of the egg to it. I'm curious enough now to try it at least once.

Fried egg sandwiches are wonderful, especially with bacon. And too much butter.

have a bacon and egg on toasted foccacia from Brunetti's in Carlton, Melbourne – superb. Got taken there the other day when I was visiting…real coffee <sigh> real breakfasts <sigh again>

Funny really, a few years ago eggs were another evil unhealthy food……

Whatisitgood4atwork20 Aug 2009 2:25 a.m. PST

Mmmm… Melbourne food. Foccacia is great. Try toasted Turkish bread too. Another goodie.

My wife grew up in Carlton.

Normally it's just the one egg!! :-)

I've been having an egg on the pizza for years so not sure that it's a new fashion.

Only yesterday I had Wiltshire ham, bubble and squeak topped off with 2 fried eggs. Washed down with a pint (or 2) of Summer Breeze. Yum.

[My wife grew up in Carlton.]

Cool. I use to live in Elwood, one suburb over from St Kilda. Wonderful city, and the best place to ride a bicycle.

Neotacha21 Aug 2009 9:21 p.m. PST

True enough, with the eggy pizza. The one I had in Brum was 11 years ago.

When it came out, I will admit to being disconcerted. I have not bothered to try it again.

But I love a fried egg sandwich. Used to eat them all the time when I was a kid -- it was a fairly quick and easy snack for me to make for myself.

Steak and eggs are popular in Chicago dives.

Baked lasagne, what we call pasta al forno, has cut up boiled eggs throughout.
Quite a nice dish.
