A vampire movie for people who don't like vampire movies. My skills as a reviewer are dwarfed by Kim Newman, so I'll let him do the work link
See it. It really is the best vampire movie I've seen in years. Unfortunately a remake is already on the cards. I'm assuming that like the remakes of [REC], The Grudge, The Vanishing etc., it will be a pale reflection of the original. But you never know. If they've got any sense they'll keep the female lead who played Eli, but as she's not a Dakota Fanning clone that's unlikely.

Agent Brown is 100% right!
Watched with my wife having no idea
what the movie was about. Glued to my seat!
Good thing for us that we have 6 cats!

I disagree…
What it is is a vampire movie for people who hate the lame emo vegetarian vampires that have been popular of late.

There are no cool leather jacketed hipsters in this… no trips to the dance club… no whining about love and loss… and even though the monster is sympathetic at times, she's still remains a strange and threatening creature.

Haven't seen it yet, but it seems to be pretty consistently recommended.

Amen, sir, I agree.

What it is is a Vampire movie where the Vampire is an evil monster in human form, with some vestigial humanity left over.

She's not a superhero, she's not a faerie creature, she's a blood drinking immortal Other. An excellent movie that's not afraid to take its time to let the setting impose itself on the viewer – one of the few movies I've ever seen where the cold weather actually feels COLD.

Great flick, highly reccomended, but be warned that it's all about suspense and tension – if you're expecting a shaky-cam action/horror movie, a Lestat-type Vampire Romance, or a Troma-esque silly gore fest, you'll get none of the above.

Fair comment. I had the new wave of defanged vampires in mind. I like the vampires from 30 Days of Night for the same reason. Eli could easily have been one of those, if a little more civilised.

Superb film

Yes Agent Brown, I very much enjoyed the 'full blooded' vamps from 30 Days too… I thought bits of it (especially the ending) were wonky… but the vampires themselves were actually SCARY for once… been a while since the vamps got to be scary.

30 Days of Night was superb. I liked this one too.

This one was superb. I liked 30 Days, although a bit crude.

Any vampire where they don't sparkle gets at least one thumb up.

This was a cleaver take on a mythic subject.

I look forward to this one, but 30 Days Of Night could have been 30 minutes long without affecting it at all.

Pijlie21 Aug 2009 6:50 a.m. PST

Come to think of it, 30 days and LTROI actually have nothing in common, except snow and vampires.

If you enjoyed the movie, I suggest you check out the novel it was based on, by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Come to think of it, read everything he has written that you can find in your language. Amazon only had Handling The Undead in english but he has written a few sets of short stories as well.
And by the way, I've lived in Blackeberg where the movie takes place and my co-workers son was an extra (a classmate) on LTROI.

Great movie with very real characters. It's really a coming of age love story…with a vampire best friend. I saw it when it was in limited release several months ago, then watched it again with my wife more recently. We both really enjoyed it.

Good movie. A slow burning storyline with believable characters. I call it the 'Stand By Me' of Vampire movies.

Rogzombie Fezian03 Sep 2009 9:06 p.m. PST

Very well done movie, even beyond the sphere of vampire movies. Hollywood is going to remake this? Thats sacrilege!

If Dakota Fanning plays the lead in this I am going to puke.
