Told from the viewpoint of a squire who is pulled from the pile of dead at Thermopylae to satiate the curiosity of Xerxes as to what motivated the Spartans to fight against such overwhelming odds. Most of the book concerns the boy's life leading up to the battle and his motivation for following them after his own village is razed and is now without a city of his own. Very well written, and the battle scenes are graphic in the extreme. Pressfield did a tremendous amount of research and gives a real feel for the period. Highly recommended. He's got a couple others out. I might try the one about the interrelationships between the Amazonians and the Greeks, but judging from the book jacket, it sounds more like a soap opera. JW |
