Was told this today by a collegue who has been in the job 20 years.

Many years ago one prison received a German Prisoner. He didn't speak English, the staff in an internal hearing knew no German, and so the Governor became frustrated at the adjudication. However one member of staff had said he knew German, and so was quickly fetched.

"Ask him to confirm his name."

The heavily accented "VOT IST YOUR NAME?" was followed by a roar of anger from the #1.
