I know many people get all of their food at stores.
I estimate nearly half of the content of our fridges and cupboards are home made, grown, produced.
Apart from the obvious eggs, chickens and vegetables from our "home farm", we have pasta sauce and pasta (can't abide the store stuff) and trays of lasagne in the freezer.
Biscotti and lemon and fig jams, orange juice and olive spread are more things we make.
How about you?

The tomatoes have been doing well. The beans and squash are coming on. But we're limited by what we can grow on this small lot, compared to what we grew up growing. Both of us grew up in homes that purchased very little from the store. Now, we make to with buying very little that is not fresh produce or fruit.

We have a decent side yard, but most of it is shaded too long during the day to grow vegetables and cutting the trees down is out of the question.

Nothing, city dweller, totally dependant on those others who grow the food and bring it here to sell.

We have a small city garden so in the summer we have enough fresh produce that I don't need to buy much of anything. The rest of the year we have to shop like everyone else. Being in the city, I'd need a permit for chickens, and I'm not sure our lot is big enough. Beyond that, I try to make a lot of things from scratch rather than buy a box or can of something, but there is a limit to the cost and effort involved.

Yard is too small, back too lousy, but as a rule I'm very much in favour of home grown. I buy at roadside stands where people offer their surplusses.

Stand is a big word, usually a folding card table, one or two crates of stuuff, and an honour system money box.

@ Jana.
Its a fact of modern life that we dont have the time to prepare and make food as much as we'd like.
I should say the quality of most supermarket foods is pretty good.
We'd all be better off though, in so many ways, if life was a bit more leisurely.

Grown so far this year:

Peas
Tomatoes
Butter nut Squash
Courgette
Cucumber
Onions
Peppers
Chillies

Have had a bumper crop of chillies and ow have a freezer full of chilli concarni!

I would love to grow more but just do not have the space.

Most of our fresh veggies and some of the fruit comes
from CSA members (Community Supported Agriculture).

Basically, you buy a membership in a CSA farm and during
the growing season receive a weekly supply of the farm's
output, the amount depending upon your $ contribution.

The farm to which we subscribe is a great deal, since
they allow you to swap unwanted items for others.
They are also a certified source for Organic veggies,
and are used by local restaurants.

My peppers are doing really well. Tomatoes started off well, but the large amount of rain that we've had has produced a pretty poor crop.

Tomatoes are lousy this year in Ohio, not enough warm weather, the green tomatoes are rotting on the vine. That being said,my corn is doing well,I estimated I have over 100 ears on 4 10 foot rows. I have potatoes as well,I dug 2 hills for new potatoes a couple of weeks ago and they were excellent. My onions were disapointing, though. I've also got some nice pumpkins growing. However,to completely rely on homegrown instead of the grocery,I'd have to dig up alot more of the yard.

I have to add, though, I'm jealous of my sister's crops. She lives in SoCal,and sh'e up to her ears in lemons, oranges and peaches this year.

Making or growing my own food is time that is better spent on painting miniatures, IMHO.
