A motorcyclist was clocked at speeds up to 188 mph in a high speed chase that started in Iowa and finished in Omaha, Nebraska. He was weaving in and out of traffic, using the shoulder and center line to pass other vehicles. The Iowa State Patrol (ISP) cars could not keep up with him as he sped down Interstate 29 in Iowa. An ISP aircraft followed him from above and kept up nicely . Nebraska State Patrol arrested him in Omaha NE. when he got off Interstate 80 and went to a friend's house. 188 mph highest speed ever clocked in Iowa since a Dodge Viper was clocked at 180mph 10 years ago. He was wearing a helmet. Dumb and lucky. Terry |

No kidding. At 188mph the helmet is going to be useless except as a cleanup convenience when they sponge the rest of the guy off the soundwall. Assuming they have soundwalls in Iowa or Nebraska. |

Did you know that Iowa isn't an acronym? If you are going to ride your motorcycle you should probably go ahead and wear that helmet anyway. None of my patients were ever wearing helmets. There is something to that. |

Ideally a full leather motorcycle suit as well – docs like having all the donor organs in one handy packet

Helmets are a good thing. I know from experience. Even when I'm in a no helmet law state I wear mine. Jake |

I'm not a "No Helmet Law" advocate, by the way. I was just pointing out, in the customary ways of TMP, that he was negating the safety functions of the helmet at those speeds. Which leaves another perfectly reasonable reason for the helmet: aerodynamics. 188mph is a tough wind to keep your eyes open in
The combination of helmet and bike colors makes the "can't see my face" function of the helmet useless even for less ambitious speeders, notwithstanding the Police air support that never lost sight on him

Why do people think the can out run Radio? |

He was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, no leathers. There are a few sound walls in IA and NE, usually made of wood. Terry |

An ISP aircraft followed him from above and kept up nicely. Nebraska State Patrol arrested him in Omaha NE. Nebraska let the Iowa aircraft across its border? Where is border security when you need it

I imagine they tracked his wind burned body using a thermal imaging system. |

188 mph on a motorbike? In traffic. WOW! |

No kidding. At 188mph the helmet is going to be useless except as a cleanup convenience when they sponge the rest of the guy off the soundwall. Actually, a helmet is really quite useful at that speed – for example when you get hit in the head by a big bug, or a pebble thrown up by a vehicle in front of you
You also need a helmet or goggles to be able to see. This clearly thought he could outrun radio signals, for some reason. -Kle. |
