My first-born and I are heading out at oh-my-god-30 in the morning to Baltimore (we're flying out of LAX) so we can go check out Columbia and Lehigh Universities. I might be able to wave at Patrick as we drive into Leesburg for the night and we'll most likely go past OFMland, but I fear that meeting with TMPers will have to wait until such time as he actually attends a college and I have an excuse. Still, I'm going to try and find Complete Strategist down the street from the Empire State Building – or we'll hit the comic shop across the street as I have to buy something to thank my host who will be driving us about for the next four days. University of Miami keeps sending postcards to my son asking him to attend, but they have all those touchy-feely non-technical majors that are good if you don't mind a career of "would you like fries with that?" or "I object!" Neither option appeals to my son, your future world overlord. I'm still trying and convince him that culling the legal herd with judicious use of skeet-shooting tournaments is not a bad thing but he rightfully points out that any field that has NYCJadie in it can't be entirely bad and that if one is going to take over the world, it is best to do it in a legally binding way. Enjoy! Baltimore will be just as hot as L.A., but five or six times as humid. -Kle. |

if one is going to take over the world, it is best to do it in a legally binding way. Or atleast as near as George W Bush got in any case

Lehigh has a neighboring game store in Emmaus, called Dragonhead distributors. He may be in the process of moving now, though, to Easton. |

If you only have to look at two, count yourself lucky. When my youngest (very heavily recruited; 4.0 and played basketball) started looking at schools, we drove to central California and I swear we hit just about every college and university (3 to 5 a day) within 50 miles of I-5 heading north to the border. The I-5 tour took well over a week! I was impressed with one thing. With just a couple exceptions, there is very little substantive difference between the various institutions. After all that, she ended up going to Gonzaga -- 20 miles from our house! Well at least I won't have to do that again. Best of luck with yours. mjc |

Isn't college in California, for California residents at least, ridiculously cheap? If that is still the case why on earth is he looking out of state? |

Isn't college in California, for California residents at least, ridiculously cheap? If that is still the case why on earth is he looking out of state? Because however much you love them, at some point a young person must escape the sphere of parental influence, if only to truly appreciate how right Mom & Dad really were. College is a (generally) safe and acceptable time to do this. |

No fooling. My wife wants him far enough away that we don't have to hear about any mid-level college foolishness. UCLA and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo are on the list for September visits. Harvard and Coopers Union are essentially closed for August so we'll have to do another trip if need be. Lehigh has appeal because there is the potential of him getting a considerable portion of his tuition covered. Their architecture program is also flexible enough that he can pull off the double major he wants – with the possibility of adding a third or an equal number of minors. It is an interesting campus – largely self-contained but close enough to blast out to NYC or Philly. But the town around the campus is a no-go zone after dark. On a personal (his) level his "wife" (female friend and classmate since they were in kindergarten) is potentially going to a college in NYC – only an hour away. But, his girlfriend (classmate for the past 3 years) is trying for UCLA. I don't think females will enter into the calculations, but there are clear mental benefits from either location. Oh, and I do know a couple of happy lawyers. Wyatt |
