About to start painting Samurai, I have my movies and sourcebooks, but would like to pick up a novel or two. Any Bernard Cornwalls of the Samurai genre? Maybe a good mystery? |

Go straight to the source, Yoshitsune. It is a 15th century Japanese novel written about the 12th century and it is great. At $40, it is worth the price. I read it in college and I have read it at least two more times in 25 years. The first link is a synopsis of the book and the last two are links selling used copies. link link |

For some odd reason, the first link will drop off the post when I submit it. Mike |

I.J. Parker's Akitada series is very good. Just the sort of thing you're looking for. link |

I like the Lone Wolf & Cub graphic novels. They have a lot of historical and socio-economic facts built around a heroic fantasy story. It's also one of the top graphic novels of all time. |

You can try the Novel that the Japanese consider the best. Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa - It's a fictionlized account of Miyamoto Musashi, the master swordsman and author of The Book of Five Rings. It was a major hit in Japan, was considered a classic when it first came out. |

If you don't mind a big stretch away from historical, The Assassin Gambit by William Forstchen is a fun sci-fi read featuring the 47 Ronin
and wargaming. You have to swallow the premise (time-travellers bring ancient warriors to the future for "real" wargames), but it's thoroughly enjoyable and surprisingly respectful of the historical Ronin. link (It's the second in a series of three books, the first featuring Alexander the Great and the last featuring Napoleon.) |

I agree – I enjoyed the "Clan War" novels set in the 'Legend of the Five Rings' fantasy RPG setting. |
