I sometimes read, in magazines with authors from non-English-speaking countries but editors who should know better, that such-and-such company is coming out with its latest "novelties."

However, the definition of "novelty" that I most remember is this one (several versions):

a small cheap toy or trinket

cheap, showy

gewgaw, trinket, bangle, bauble

In Retail novelties just refers to something new.

What a novel idea.

And "adult novelties" has a slightly different shade of meaning.

What do you buy at a novelty store?

Bill, only stuff you realize you didn't need or even want as soon as you come home.

gimcracks and frivolops and widgets: the mainstay of the no-longer-industrialized American economy…..

"a small cheap toy or trinket… cheap, showy… gewgaw, trinket, bangle, bauble"

Which used to be pretty well guaranteed to be marked "Made in Japan" (for those of a certain age).

"gimcracks and frivolops and widgets: the mainstay of the no-longer-industrialized American economy…"

Unfortunately, that's probably true: the center has shifted.

And the Germans make the best adult novelties. Superior engineering…
