You all know what a land yacht is don't you- triangle frame with a wheel at each corner and a sail.
Well when my dad did his National Service in the mid-50s he was trained as a 'Blacksmith/Welder' in the RAF (May be for the Pegasus!)
Anyway a young office who had been in the US saw the early land yachts, and coming back had gone down the works and said "Lads, build me a land yacht" and gave their bewildered faces a brief description. Now bear in mind these are all working class lads who's horizons are beer, birds, and 'bumfreezers', and had probably only seen a telly when they watched the Coronation in '53.
So they built a 'land yacht'
The old man reckons they used 2 inch angle iron, tail wheels from Spitfires (which are a LOT bigger than 1:72 Airfix would have you believe) and a scaffold pole as the mast.
He guesses that it would have taken a 100mph gale to move the ruddy thing
