My son asked me what I wanted for my birthday, so I told him to go to my Amazon.com shopping cart for a pretty good idea. So, yesterday A!S! arrived, and he handed it to me with a "Happy birthday, Dad!" grin. (Barry Lyndon is apparently shipped from a different warehouse.) I must say that I do not recognize me or any of my friends in that book at all! No sir, nothing seems familiar
Except for the bits on pages
Seriously, it is eerily and creepily familiar, like he has been reading my mail. His history of wargaming is fascinating, with much more detail than I was aware of. It seems that the surly FLGS owner who ignores his customers is an old complaint, and we can probably blame the French for it. I was laughing like a maniac last night, reading on my front porch until it got too dark. I laughed until I stopped. link |

It is truly a great book. Like "The Grapes of Wrath" or "War and Peace", but better in all respects. |

When did it get a blue cover? I guess mine's collectible now! Yeah, it's a fun book. Worth reading over again. |

Is your boy back from Basic, then? Or is there another son? |

Jack has been home about 3 weeks now. He got in late at the airport, so we went to a truckstop to eat. A driver came over to shake his hand and thank him

Fun enough book. He's being a bit silly about Fantasy and SF gaming mind |

A book I enjoy re-reading about once a year. |

Yep, I don't know how he knew enough to write about me (the alternate me in the UK), but he did. Hysterically funny and informative. |

It gets creepier if you come from the same place as Harry so that you really do recognise everything! |
| Gallowglass | 09 Jul 2009 8:45 a.m. PST |
It was a good read. I think we can all relate to a lot of it. |

Never heard of it but sounds like a treat. Maybe my FLGS owner can get it for me. |
| mweaver | 09 Jul 2009 9:40 a.m. PST |
I keep meaning to order it

I thought the bit where he was reading a Wargames Mag on the train and ended up collared by a loud GW fan was a hoot. |
| hurcheon | 09 Jul 2009 11:35 a.m. PST |
I was recently on a train and two GW playing guys, with cases and codexes, maybe 18-2o were having a min-maxing discussion on the seat across from me So I now knew what we sound like to the outside world. OBsessed weirdos |

"we sound like to the outside world" Wargamming, for me at least, is like Fight Club. You never talk about Wargamming (or Roleplaying or
). Period. Full Stop. |

What frightened me was that I knew EXACTLY what he was talking about on 99% of his obscure references. |
| jpattern2 | 09 Jul 2009 4:42 p.m. PST |
It's definitely a "familiar" read for those of us of a certain age. |

If you ever delved into RPGs in the early years too then The Elfish Gene is also an entertaining read and frightning flashback to the teen years. link Steve P |

Came this morning. I've almost finished it. Not bad considering the postman came just before we left to go to the Science Museum for the day! |
