I am reading a GW 'Black Library' book, and very enjoyable it is too. In my defence I would say it is Ciaphas Cain – Hero of the Imperium. I saw something online that said it was like a cross between Flashman and Blackadder. I've read my son's codices etc, and this takes the mickey out of the 'heroic' prose they present, the 'editor' (a inquisitor) of the 'autobiography' by Cain- a Commissar – criticises the writing style of various 'official' documents that are included by herself to give context to Cain's writings. He engineers his first assignment to a Arty unit- because they are MEANT to be a long way from the enemy- and accidently becomes a hero (he is actually trying to run away). His reputation leads him to keep getting more and more dangerous assignments, because he is a bona fide hero, and his attempts to stay out of the mucky stuff leads him to keep fighting more and more dangerous enemies. Of course, being a commisar, his first job is not to get 'accidentally' shot by his own side! |

I keep looking at on the shelves at Barnes and Noble. I talk myself out of it by saying to myself "I hate 40K fluff!" Although B&N lets you sit and read before buying, and the first 20 pages were actually pretty good. |

I quite enjoyed the Eisenhorn trilogy. I have the Gaunt's Ghosts Founding trilogy, but haven't read it yet. I might check out Cain when I get back. |

I am reading the Cain Stuff right now and I think it's good fun. I found them at our used book store for $1.50 USD each. |

John, get it, it's an amusing and easy read. Cain happily admits he is a SoB, carefully building a reputation as a caring Commissar, but making sure there are plent of IG around to catch bullets. |

That sounds good! After all the excellent Gaunt's Ghosts books I have read and enjoyed I have never considered GW books "guilty pleasures" at all. |

Got them all. They are a fun read, well written and certainly don't take the 40K universe seriouly. Along with Gaunt's Ghosts they're the best stuff Black Library print. |

The Cain books are really good. I read a lot of 40k books and most are entertaining at least. The Gaunts Ghosts and other Dan Abnett are really well written. |
