Now don't get me wrong, all steriotypes are bad, espesaly if they are truly made based on racism and not humor. But realy, that african-americans are stuck with watermellon and fried chicken isn't that bad I mean they are both DELICIOUS, I love them both and i'm a white as you can get, I can't even get a tan I only get red. Think of the poor french that are beeing asociated with frogs legs and snails, that SUCKS, or us poor norwegians that have to live with the stigma of beeing asociated with lute fisk(actualy no realy norwegians actualy eat the stuff, as it can kill you, only Norwegian-American are stupid enough to eat old fish dunked in caustic soda.) End of messige (this way my atempt at beeing funny, sorry if I offended anybody(except you norwegian-americans you totaly deserve it) |

Or the Scots, who base much of their cuisine on "what someone dared us to eat." I'm not even sure where the Fried Chicken thing came from, though watermelon is easy since its a common water source in large parts of Africa. Like the "beer and wine" answer to questionable water in Europe, watermelons filter out the crud and provide drinkable, if sugary, water. |

I eat like half a watermellon a day in the warmth, a few hours in the fridge and it's nice and cool, sadly I don't have room for them i my fezer but an hour in there would do the trick |

Yeah
pretty much everyone likes chicken and watermelon, hard to see why one group in particular would get that association. I don't know my own cultural heritage
I'm pretty sure I'm not Thai despite my addiction to green curry and pad thai. |

I don't care for watermelon all that much, but I love fried chicken. |

I dislike watermelon, though not other melons, and took a lot of effort for relatives to get me to eat it, eventually obstinacy paid off. It tastes like a sponge, lacking the texture I associate with fruit and vegetables. |

I love both watermellon and fried chicken. I've never understood why that is a "stereotype" of african americans, I thought it was just fairly common among all people. Most people I know like fried chicken and watermellon. |

Fried chicken may have been a common food amomg slaves as it is cheap and thay would not need much room for their own chickens. I love it also. |

Love 'em both. Fried chicken is very popular in Asia. It may have been too much for General Westmoreland, but Colonel Sanders has had no difficulty conquering Vietnam. |

Fried chicken, pork chops, black-eyed peas, collard greens, and sweet potato pie. Just tell me where, and I'm there. |

Fried chicken may have been a common food amomg slaves as it is cheap A common misperception. Until modern times and the advent of "factory farming", chicken was not the cheap meat it is today. The primary function of chickens was to lay eggs and chickens were typically only slaughtered after they had layed out. To do otherwise would be to destroy a steady source of food and income*, much like slaughtering a good milk cow. Chicken was actually a bit of a treat, hence it's place in the traditional Sunday dinner, which tended to a bit more of an affair than the other meals of the week. *My grandmothers both made decent butter and egg money into the 1960's. We still sell excess eggs to neighbors.

I wish I could find my sources, but the watermelon & fried chicken stereotype didn't appear until the early 20th century. If I remember correctly, in urban areas watermelon was sold off of wagons, just like ice. Anyway, the stereotype came out of urban areas where neighborhoods were divided as to ethnicity & race. |

Watermelon is the one melon I can eat and the one I do not like. Fried chicken in all its greasy crunchy goodness is another matter. Don't forget the English/New England cuisine of boil it until you cannot recognize it anymore |

I'm wondering what passes for "good" watermelon in the northeast, since most of the negative responses have come from there. I've had a properly thumpy* watermelon straight off the vine, and there is little better to be had on a hot valley summer day. * ripe watermelons "thump" (with a knuckle) distinctively, and with practice you can always get a good one, or at least the best the store has. |

I wonder how long you could survive on just Fried chicken amd watermelon. I mean you could probebly keep going until you either died of a heartattack because of cloged arteries or unitl you died of vitamin defisancies. Whould be cool to take a 5 year old and only let him eat those things and see just how old he got. |

If you pan-fry chicken properly (in deep oil, to be sure), it absorbs very little oil. And if you choose the right oil, it's not a problem. As for watermelon, it's darned good for you: link Allen |

The best watermelon I've ever had came off the back of the farmers' trucks in the alley behind my grandmother's house when I was a kid. I don't know what it's called, but the collection area was back there and they'd throw one to all the kids who were watching them unload. Still love watermelon to this day. Too bad they didn't throw any fried chicken. Love that, too. JW |
