I can say that I've used it once, and it really worked. Oh well, so much for our war against the common cold.

Toshach16 Jun 2009 7:56 p.m. PST

It did work. In fact, I remember when it first hit the market. It was touted as the only cold remedy supported by actual research.

Out of the millions who have used it, only 130 have reported that they lost some of their sense of smell. Heck, 50% of those who have eaten at Los Dos Molinos have lost their sense of smell, taste, and hearing after just one dinner, and nobody's shutting them down.

I don't know a smoker that can smell anything much.

"My dog has no nose."
"How does it smell?"

Given that I have a fairly sensitive nose, I shouldn't mind it if it weakened the sense of smell.

OTOH, I'd rather smell things than not. And with allergies to south Texas, I'm stopped up for so much of the year that having a cold is a minor annoyance at worst.

"How does it smell?"

Awful.

My mother lost her sense of smell/taste after a heavy cold. Wasn't much fun since she wouldn't notice something burning on the stove or when she double-dosed bleach when cleaning.

I tend to think that all this crap should just go through the FDA in the first place, instead of there being a special "snake oil" category that doesn't require approval.

Either that, or kill the FDA and just let everything be caveat emptor.

If you take Zicam your cold will be gone in a week. If you don't it will be gone in seven days.

The 130 that keeps being talked about it is direct complaints to the FDA from doctors and patients. It says nothing about the number of complaints Zicam itself has received. Or for that matter to the BBB or anywhere else people can compain to.

Half the pharmacy is snake oil. I don't know how pharmacists can live with themselves. If I'm sick and go buy some cold medicine, I make sure I cough on the herbal remedies.

"I don't know how pharmacists can live with themselves."

They fall for the same sales pitches the doctors do, and may have to stock something because a local doctor wants it regardless of their own opinion…

Wow. I really hope you are kidding.

Hexxenhammer18 Jun 2009 12:27 p.m. PST

If they work as advertised, it won't matter if I'm kidding or not.
