So for those of you that remember, we were "outsourced" due to a new company becoming the contract vendor for our IT. (Hint: I can't tell you the name
only say the one word "DUDE!") So today they had a mandatory telemeeting where we get to sit and listen to the "Dude!" representatives give us a ballyhoo story about "working for their company"
Now naturally they have not said "YES WE ARE GOING TO HAVE POSITIONS OPEN FOR YOU TO APPLY FOR"
Instead, what they have said is that "We are working to open positions of importance and need. We are looking for people to fill these positions". Some of the questions (and answers)
. 1: How many positions are you opening? ( That's a good question. We are working right now to get a good estimate on the number of positions.) 2: Will the positions be in the same location? (That's a good question. We are working with resources right now to get an estimate of the locations of these future positions). 3: Will the people that you are outsourcing have priority or a better chance for these positions based on their current experience? (That's a good question. Right now we are working on making sure that we get the best available candidates for the best positions). I think I don't need to say more. We sat throught an hour long meeting hosted by an HR goober and an IT goober that can't / won't tell us anything concrete other than "We will be getting back with you on this." And people wonder WHY I want OUT of IT

I am reminded of a Dilbert strip a few years ago
"They wouldn't call them 'human resources' if they didn't intend to strip mine them." |

I got out of IT three years ago and haven't regretted it since. I was only a "Senior Computer Operator" at the time. When they eliminated the Network Engineer slot that I had hoped to move into, I was able to read the writing on the wall and started looking at other employment options. I do miss the money though

There are still markets for IT, but you need to get away from population centers. IF you are qualifed and are willing to work for a little less. Look at rural community colleges or companies. Look in town of LESS than 25,000. IT is the infrastructure of business, some one has to maintain it. |

You have to wonder.. why have a meeting at all? When the answer clearly is: We don't know, or are unwilling to tell you in any case. |

There are sometimes outsourcing deals where the outsourcing company wants the old employees, but this does not sound like one of them. |

Start looking! This doesn't look good for you. Been there, done that. Got out, miss the money but way, way happier. |

You have to wonder.. why have a meeting at all? Because generally these sort of things are a LEGAL requirement, and unfortunately it is legal to have a meeting about something (under the guise of 'consultation with your employees'), and legally tell them sweet all! Been there, seen it, had my job sent to India! |

What Raynman said
Start looking immediately. I have been involved in a number of these outsourcings in the past but not as the outsourced comapny and not the employee. They will start by looking for the lowest paid employees and those with unique irreplacable knowledge to keep. After that its a crap shoot depending on people they already have lined up or on the bench versus the employee pool. I wish you the best of luck

Murphy, three words for you: EJECT, EJECT, EJECT! Do not take these buffoons up on a job offer. You can do better with a lower level of exasperation elsewhere. |
