Although I think Catcher in the Rye sucks, I am glad to see an author defending his work from blood sucking "sequel" writers.
'Tis a pity that Margaret Mitchell's "estate" did not have the same integrity re GWTW.
I pray the George MacDonald Fraser's estate defends Flashman to the last ditch. We don't want no stinking hacks running roughshod, do we?

Oh, jiminy! Can you imagine Holden as a whiny old man? Yuck!

I agree. Good for him!

But as I understand it, which may be incorrectly so I stand to be corrected, MM's estate only commissioned a sequel when GWTW was about to enter the public domain – which would have allowed anyone to write a sequel. By writing a sequel they protected the characters from open slather.

The last ditch is – depending on jurisdiction – 50 years after the author has entered his or her last ditch.

I enjoyed Catcher In The Rye… but not quite as much as everyone had told me I was supposed to.
Later on I started to realize that all of Salinger's stories seemed to revolved around precocious/privileged children…
That's one reason The Royal Tannenbaums was particularly enjoyable… it was like a Salinger family all grown up and disfunctional like you know they'd have to be.

But yeah, it's a good thing to say 'no' to sequels…

I suffered/struggled through TCITR in college. I've pretty much blotted it out of my memory since then.
