Armando Ianucci, he of Brass Eye and The Thick of It, has just finished presenting a Docu (on BBC2 in the UK) on John Milton.

The impression he gives is that, apart from a few mangey office-spaces in the city, Milton is a Poet unacknowledged in his own country.

Are there really no significant public memorials to Milton in this land? If not, why not? I can think of few men of his time that are better deserving, and given that 'His Dark Materials' , one of the most succesful childrens books of my era, is really 'Paradise Lost' turned into a Book, I am startled he is not more celebrated.

Pat, You could read the novel Milton in America by Peter Accroyd. I have an illustrated Paradise Lost from 1840 which is ironic really cos I detest the old Bleeped text. It is though a lovely book and came from the library of a Miners Institute from the days when the working class had hope.
