Peanuts are, after the trusty coffee bean naturally, one of my favourite bounties of Mother Nature.

Whether I have to shell them myself, have them salted (bad for my blood pressure…), dry roasted or coated as cocktail nuts, I just love them as one of the simple pleasures of life.

Peanutbutter is very nice too, I prefer the crunchy variety. I do not condone, however, the decadent habit of the American half of the Gungnir household to smother the good honest peanutbutter with disgusting jelly.

Okay, after her operation, being a good husband and attempting to be a basically nice guy, I did prepare this filthy dish for her, but as you will understand I afterwards scoured, disinfected and then ceremonially burried the poor knife I was forced to use for this unfortunate action.

Much better to warm up some peanutbutter with soy sauce to make an impovised but delicious peanut sauce for sateh babi or sateh ajam, pieces of pork or chicken, respectively, put on a bamboo barbeque skewer and roasted in the Indonesian fashion.

Oh, and in Winter we put out unroasted unshelled peanuts for the birds, mainly jackdaws, in our yard, they love them too.

I think we need a peanut emoticon!

I too like this Bean a lot. I am an ex Vegetarian, and sonmething this tasty is always useful in a Veg diet.

My wife however will not kiss me if I have recently eaten peanuts.

To me, a Peanut emoticon would summon Memes for 'Pleasure', 'Hunger Satisfied' and 'Less Sex than I would Like'

I used to be a HUGE fan, until we discovered my son is allergic. I haven't touched one since.

I make peanut butter and olive sandwiches, mmmmm!!!

I'm in agreement re: slathering any form of jelly on
peanut butter ! Atrocity !

Basic peanut butter, crackers, a glass of milk – what
more could one want ?

Try boiled peanuts sometime. A surprisingly tasty but different snack.

Peanut butter on a hot dog – wonderful!

Hastati20 May 2009 12:53 p.m. PST

I am a big fan of boiled peanuts (my father is from South Carolina). Fortunately, the comissary stocks them.

That sounds great! I'll give it a try this week.

My fav is either peanut butter melted on whole wheat toast or peanut butter drizzled with honey over untoasted whole wheat.

When I was a kid (many many years ago) my Dad and I grew peanuts, they are completely different and excellent fresh from the ground.

dmmclellan, words fail me.

I agree with you Gungir. I eat separate Peanut Butter and jelly sandwiches. Cut'em in hald and dunk 'em in a cup of coffee. I've been doing this since I was about 9 years old. It's a great breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack. Hope I'll be doing it at 90 as well.

Sane Max22 May 2009 4:35 a.m. PST

how do you boil peanuts? How long do you give them? (And this is the possibly top stupid question EVER but you never know) – do you remove them from the shell first, or after? and how do you serve them? Would you use them the same way you use ChickPeas sorta thing? CAN YOU MAKE IT INTO HUMMUS?

Mmmmmmmmmmm Leguminous fun. I think I shall have Chickpea fritters tonight.

Peanut Saté sauce. Tastes divine and drives Belgians nuts.

What more do you need ?

stenicplus26 May 2009 9:15 a.m. PST

Peanut butter and jam mixed is great. What's not to like? Fruit and nuts together, doesn't get much healthier. I picked up the habit from American friends when living in Spain, my family were horrified :D

Has to be on toast or warmed croissant though. Oh, and must be raspberry or blackberry jam too.

While I agree totally with the views on that colonial abonimation known as PB&J, may I point out Jelly is what you have with Ice Cream. The word you are looking for is Jam.

[Having set the petard and lit the fuse, the Hussar was seen to ride furiously as far away from the explosion as he could, laughing maniacally].

I wonder what the US call the preservative jelly used to fill the empty space in a pork pie where butchers have been too tight to pack it with meat…ish product.

Do you even get pork pies in the US?

Planters dry roasted, and lightly salted dry roasted. And Skippy extra chunky, by the spoonfull….

britishlinescarlet229 May 2009 1:28 p.m. PST

In my part of the UK there is a difference between Jelly and Jam preserves. A "Jelly" preserve has the pips removed, a jam does not.

Here jelly is supposed to not have any pieces of fruit in it. Just smooth and basically made from the juice. Jam has most of the fruit in it. About the same as preserves.

Ok, I helped the parents and grandparents can too much.

Gelatin. And I was brought up the same as Hauptmann6 as to how to distinguish jelly and jam.

We've been enjoying sugarless peanut butters lately. There are actually more calories per serving, because of the fats, but they taste fine. "O" Organics makes a very sticky smooth version; the missus likes that. I prefer Laura Scudder's, and another brand, Adams, which are grainier.

Peanut butter on matzah: mmmmm!

Dont mess with the Goober-Grape! Sorry,I like good old PB&J,thats comfort food. I like my peanuts in the shell, unsalted,so I can use the hulls as mulch for my garden. That warmed PB and soy sounds interesting though, will have to try that.
