Dude! You really need to expand your culinary horizons beyond Chuck E. Cheese

I am presuming you are frequenting chain style places (Applebee's, Chili's, etc.).

I would use the local search on many search engines. Type in "Best Ribs" or "Best Pizza" for OKC or wherever you are going to visit. You'll find some hole-in-the-wall dive with great food.

From there, ask where should you get the best Chinese, or best burger, best steak. Play the word-of-mouth game.

You might get some clunkers, but overall it works.

I love eating out here. The food is fantastic and incredibly cheap. Cheaper than I could make it myself in most cases.

Here's a suggestion, kyoteblue. How about you two create dinner one night? It just might be fun. grin

Sadly , She just doesn't like cooking. With or without me.

The only words of advice I ever took seriously was, "Good sex last a long time, but good cooking last forever."

Unless you live in a small town far away from anything else, you're just not trying hard enough to find a good place.

I'd agree. Rather than any chain style places, simply walk around your town centre and look at the various restaurants, just try a few you've never been in before.

I am reliably informed that the "town centre" of Oklahoma City has a restaurant or two. Kyoteblue is only a few minutes away, I suspect.

Yes It has become a thing of the past pretty much for me. Too bad… Service, food and prices are not consumer friendly.

Eating out is a mixed pleasure, for certain. I try to ignore my fellow human creatures when doing so….

Allow me to recommend:

hollandburger.com/home.html

As seen on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" (Food Netwrok). A local institution.

On the way home from the orthopedist's this afternoon, we stopped and split a Trucker's Sandwich (roast beef, bacon, Ortega chilies, and Monterey Jack, all grilled like a Philly cheesesteak so that you get charred beef and pepper bits!), which we had with onion rings instead of fries. Filled us both, and cost less than $10 USD with drinks. And you won't find nicer people.

Chatted with the other customers: a table full of truckers, a lone driver at the counter, and a couple from Vegas who had ordered a whole sandwich each--and wound up carrying half of each away. It's really a "community" type of place, regardless of whether you're local or just passing through. Or you can just sit and watch the hummingbirds outside the window…

Find your local equivalent. They're out there.

[I try to ignore my fellow human creatures when doing so….]

For that, I am sure they are grateful. Or should be.

There's a restaurant behind our apartment building, and their food is quite decent. And a few chain numbers within walking distance from us.

Allen, that link is PURE EVIL

aecurtis Fezian12 May 2009 10:05 p.m. PST

But the food is SIMPLY HEAVEN.

They do really good coffee, too.

aecurtis Fezian12 May 2009 10:15 p.m. PST

It's kind of cool when the cook notices the waitress is busy, takes your order off the grill, puts it onto two plates (since we were splitting it), loads both plates up with onion rings, and then brings them over to your table himself.

I had to hassle him a little though, and remind him he needs to develop the flair of the older cook he works with, who can sort of toss the plates down onto the table with a studied nonchalance. He just chuckled.

Yeah, it's that kind of place.

What's more, the same classis rock radio station was on that we have on in the van. While we were eating, they played "Live and Let Die"; the film was our first date at the drive-in in Saco, Maine, 36 years ago. We told 'em, and everyone went, "Aaawwwwwwwwww!"

Yeah, it's that kind of place.

Dude! You're going to the wrong places. Don't go to the places that say "Family Dining." Also, one of our favorite places is also a very noisy place because it's also the favorite place for a lot of other people, therefore lots of noise. If we want a lot of quiet and privacy, we go upscale ($40+) for the special amenities. That's in Seattle, I'd expect to have to pay $60+ in larger cities for peace and quiet.

I gotta say, the best dining out we've had in about five months was a recent visit to (of all places) Red Lobster. Think we've been there four times in as many years, but this last visit was just scrumptious.

Famous Daves is another great meal waiting to happen.

Get away from the chains and find some good mom and pop joints.
