Multi-Man Publishing's updated Panzerblitz boardgame, Hill of Death, is out. Anyone tried it?

Andrew Walters04 May 2009 11:27 a.m. PST

I have my eye on this, too. It's supposed to be a "modernization," which could mean anything. They specifically went after the "gameyness" of the system, which is probably good because PB was kind of broken. But who knows what else they thought needed changing.

BoardGameGeek has a page on it, of course link

It has a 7.61 rating, which is more than respectable.

Here's a "mini-review":

Here's an image that compares the counters of the old and new games. Quite the difference.

We didn't call it "PanzerBush" for nothing. You could hide massive amounts of armor in a single hex of trees, then scuttle to the next hex without anyone being able to shoot you.

PanzerBush is probably the number one reason the game got redone. The big question is how did they solve it and what else did they see deserving of fixing?

As for the first:
Can you not move into cover unless you start adjacent?
Is there opportunity fire?

As for the second:
Are there now morale rules?
Did they fiddle with artillery?

I understand the rationale for chit-pull activation and its supposed superiority to I-go-you-go, but I have not enjoyed activation systems (GBoH, Panzer Grenadier, Combat Commander (sort of)).

I'd jump at a chance to try this game, but I'm not springing for it unless I know a lot more.

We need a quick, fun, flavorful small scale WW2 game. ASL is too much, PB/PL is broken, Combat Commander, my opinion, is too random and a little slow, but I'd like to try it a few more times. Panzer Grenadier is too large scale and I don't care for the activation system.

I want to try Sergeants.

I believe the "PanzerBush" issue was dealt with pretty well in PL with the introduction of Opportunity Fire.

Andrew, have you tried any of the Lock n' Load games? Squad level with really nice components.

Minondas05 May 2009 12:58 p.m. PST

Hmmm… never had chance to play PB, just couple of years before I got involved in the hobby. But I've spent literally hundreds of hours with 'East Front'/'West Front' from Talonsoft on my PC. If I understand it correctly, this game is based on PB rules (although there was opportunity fire). If this updated version is anything like EF/WF, I will be snapping it up sooner or later.

Andrew, I second the Lock n' Load games, although ASL Starter Kits work very nicely too. Also, I saw a completely new title in my local game store, called 'Conflict of Heroes'. Seemed to be on squad level – here is the link to Boardgame Geek side: link

I have ASL starter kit #3, but I still think it's too much, too slow.

I'd love a chance to try out Lock'N Load, but I think it may also be overburdened with rules.

Conflict of Heroes is on my radar. I'd love a chance to play, but have been too busy to study it on the web yet.

Wait for Fighting Formations from GMT, it is going to blow the other games away.

Here is a very high standard print and play, that is sophisticated but has relatively short and very clear rules valorandvictory.com

boardgame geek has quite a bit on the game.
