What's worse than canned cheese? Canned cheeseburger, apparently.

Designed for those who want a ready-to-go cheeseburger while camping link
this is apparently enough to send you packing back to a McDonalds for a taste of real food if the review is to be believed:

This topic is proof that we need a dedicated "Food?" board in addition to the current "Food" board. grin

There is a can of Textured Vegetable Protein "burger" substitute in the pantry which our well-meaning former neighbors--Adventists--gave us. Apparently the Adventists sell the bejesus out of that and similar stuff to each other down in Loma Linda (or up, for you!).

I was reading a vegan recipe for purslane (verdolaga) that calls for TVP chunks. Nancy said, "Oh, finally: we could use that can." I just shivered…

Um Yuck…..

Tell us how that works out for you, ok? I'm always up for learning from someone else's mistakes.

I'm just going to do the verdolaga "con queso" and make some tacos with it. I'm not *that* dumb.

A local Chinese grocery sells sausage roll in a can. I really can't even imagine what canned pastry would be like. The same can has been sitting on the shelf for at least a year.

Years ago, I adopted a vegan lifestyle for a few years.
After having some neuro problems linked to lack of
the right kind of protein, went back to an omnivore
lifestyle.

TVP and I have a mutual hate/hate relationship…

Certain blood types cope better on certain diets, as regards animal proteins. I don't think anyone has found a blood type that likes TVP.

I wonder how it holds up to those really weird microwavable hamburgers.

Henrix24 Apr 2009 2:54 a.m. PST

Why? Probably because they hate good food.

raducci24 Apr 2009 3:07 a.m. PST

If you live on a TVP diet youll live forever.
The trouble is you wont want to.

Sane Max24 Apr 2009 7:06 a.m. PST

TVP tastes like Kapok I agree.

Most Processed Meatalikes are crap though.

Pat,
You are a very, very bad man!
lol

The missus insisted that I mention that "Soy-rizo" (Mexican chorizo, only meatless, with soy protein) ain't bad. There's enough flavoring to overcome the absence of swine parts you'd really rather not think about anyway.

I have been a vegetarian for about 16 years no, no beef, fish or poultry. Some of the morningstar stuff isn't so bad. The thing you have to get over is you are not about to take a bite out of a beef patty. They really shouldn't call it a veggie burger and such. TVP doesn't sound all that tasty either. If it really sucks remember, tomato sauce and cheese makes everything taste better.

Henrix25 Apr 2009 3:10 a.m. PST

I'm a vegetarian, but I cannot see why ever you would want to eat imitation meat.
You can do so much better food without that crap.

Neotacha25 Apr 2009 8:04 a.m. PST

There is no type of chorizo that is 'not bad'. It's all foul.

aecurtis Fezian25 Apr 2009 9:40 a.m. PST

Are you kidding me?

Scrambled chorizo and eggs, with some green onions and some plumpred raisins added in, it one of the great weekend morning restoratives. With fresh, hot black coffee. It will raise the dead.

Although here this morning it's SOS (a nice piece of london broil, coarsely ground at home, with bacon fat for flavor and texture) over hot cut biscuits (from scratch) just out of the oven, topped with salsa. With fresh, hot coffee, of course.

Von's had loads of perfect strawberries last night, so lunch will be those, over the rest of the biscuits, with sweetened sour cream.

Scrambled chorizo and eggs,

We do a similar dish called Argentinian Brunch.

In a large frying pan, gently sweat thinly sliced chorizo for a minute or two, pour in tins of peeled cherry tomatoes, add seasoning, a few mixed herb and stir. Bring up the heat and then crack open some eggs and gently pour them onto the top. Cover with lid and allow eggs to cook to taste (soft yoke etc…).

Serve with warmed bageutte or ciabatta to soke up the sloppy sauce. Yum.
