The book had drawings and was for the younger set, about 3 boys who found a secret club hand book in a stone wall of a cellar. It had them making shields and spears, and ended with then having a sleep out, where the bushes looked like monsters in the moon light and they fought them with their spears. Then their Father's came out of the dark and were happy they had found their old club book from when they were kids.

Now that I think back on it, not only was it a cool book for a 3rd grader but it was kind of Pagan too. Also the kids had crew cuts in the drawings so it must of been published mid 60's or father back in time. Thanks.

IIRC that would be "The Secret Hide-Out" by John Peterson.
Would have been published in the mid-1960s.

I got that book back in the 70's when I was around 3rd grade too. It was too darn cool how they had mask, spear and shield. There was a sequel too, 'Enemies of the Secret Hide-Out' and it doesn't look like either one is currently in print but Amazon has several used copies for sale.
