Spring has truly sprung and the cats are bringing up fingerling fish from the lake behind the house. A couple of them will chow down on the snacks, but Baldr-Slayer of Productivity brings them directly to me, still flopping. So, after the obligatory praise and scritches, we make a beeline back down the steps to the lake to return the fish from whence it came. Today's catch was a small bluegill about 3 inches in length. Since it was still alive, I headed back to the water and tossed it in. The fish immediately leapt out of the water and a couple of seconds later, an 18" smallmouth bass tore after it in hot pursuit. I'm going to guess that the bluegill became lunch after all. Wyatt |

Spring???? It will be going down to 16F tonight. This is Pennsylvania, NOT Alaska! |

Darn right. If it was Alaska you would likely be watching a belching volcano right about now. |

And it would be -15F not a balmy 16F above! I had a cat like yours Wyatt – he had to bring in everything for me to "check it out" and make sure it was alright to play with or eat. One day it was a bat, but my favorite was the morning I'd been out gaming until 4 a.m. with my buddies and awoke to the sounds of his "I'm sick and left you a present" and a strange thumping sound. I looked up, without my contacts or glasses on and saw him crouched in the "I'm gonna throw-up" position over the top of a large browning mass. I couldn't make out the mass of "stuff" since I am fairly blind to detail until I get within about 6 feet – meaning I can make out my toes when I'm standing up – but don't ask me for details. So, I jump up – in mostly the buff since it was summer and very warm outside to check out what the cat had vomited on the floor for me to view. I walked over, barefoot and saw, not a pile of vomit which I usually expect, but a SNAKE all coiled up and ready to strike – which it did – at my FEET!!! Fortunately the cat was quicker and he pounced on the snake's head and I slowly peeled myself off the ceiling and went looking for my snake boots and the long stove gloves to grab the thing! I found my glasses, boots and gloves, and went over to where the cat was still playing with the snake and waited until the snake struck, the cat pounced and I grabbed the sucker by the neck behind the head and took it back OUTSIDE where it belonged – and NOT in my bedroom! What a morning wake up call – not one to forget. This cat was always amusing – chasing butterflies, and all of the strange stuff – salamanders, snakes, bats, and bugs, never anything like a mouse or rabbit or squirrel, oh no, just the strange stuff! |

On a bit of a tangent, Google image saved a snake's life in my house once. We are pretty citified so were surprised by a small snake curled up in the living room. Fearing poison my wife wanted it dead pronto. 10 mins on Google turned up the snake as a common non-venomous wolf snake, so I took it out to the garden. I think it has taken up residence nearby cause we've seen it a couple of times over the last year. |
