I have short business trip, four nights in Eygpt. coming up. I might be able to everything in my hand luggage. But I usually carry a "security blanket" of pens knife, bottle opener, sewing kit etc, etc, which can not go as hand luggage Has anyone else faced this dilemma? |

Yes. They just stay home, and I trust to the Fates that I either I will not need them or I can improvise if I do. Just watch a couple of MacGyver's before you go, just in case. |

As strange as it sounds, I take the advice of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I always bring a towel with me. S'truth! |

A bottle opener shouldn't be an issue as long as it's not also a can opener. I've never had trouble with the small sewing kit, The pen knife is right out. For some reason TSA is terrified of a blade of 1/2". But then they're also terrified of a can of shaving cream (albeit they're not consistent on that one). |

Outside of checking one small bag or going without, I've sometimes simply bought new stuff at the other end. After arriving and before business starts, or perhaps at lunch, hit a local hardware store (not the airport or any touristy spot, somewhere locals go). and but tools, knife, what have you. Buy a duffel bag, too: on the way back you'll likely have more that you came with, souvenirs, documents, etc, and you can take your foreign-bought tools home in the checked duffel. Alien necessities make cool mementos; a penknife from Egypt may well look and work differently than what we're used to. I have a cool extension cord from Thailand, portfolios and notebooks from Italy, a hairbrush from Hong Kong

I imagine housekeeping at your Cairo hotel may have some of the necessary items to hand. Perhaps you might contact them ahead of time to check; even if they don't have it it won't cost them much to have someone go out to the market to get them for you. Cheers, RIchard |

Thank you everyone, you have helped clarify the issue. 1) Check in a bag 2) Do without the sharp pointy things 3) Buy on arrival The hotel is the Marriott, so it should be OK. John |
