Gents,

My wife, being a soft-hearted soul, 'rescued' a rabbit from the local pet shop, i.e. she bought it. Now, I know very little about rabbits but this one grunts and on occasion 'talks' to the parakeet [they're both in our kitchen] – by grunting, making vocalizations, etc.

I find it odd that in all my years of owning pets [dogs, cats, various birds, turtle, horses] never once did I hear of a grunting rabbit. So, I turn it over to the readership – is this bunny strange or do all bunnies do this? I'm sure they have the capacity to make some form of vocalization but the grunting is what stumped me.

It has become a March Hare a few weeks early perhaps?

One of our cats grunts when he's very happy.

Just wait 'til it screams. Literally. And for the same sorts of reasons a human does. You *will* respond to whatever's happening.

Roderick,

Already experienced the scream – the reason was a five second or so minequake [we get them quite often] and my God, I thought my parrot was loud [we have a menagerie – 2 dogs, a parrott, a parakeet and a rabbit]! Damn, but that bunny outdoes my parrott any day of the week.

Editor,

Thanks for the link! I guess we're going to be 'communicating' with our bunny from now on and learning what her grunts indicate but from the postings, it appears they indicate a displeasure of some sort. This ought to be fun!

Way back when I was a student, one of our lab rabbits used to grunt – the big aggressive doe who chased off the bucks when they tried to mate with her. She was a New Zealand White.

My daughters dwarf bunny never screamed…but it'd slit your throat on national TV for a bite of Key Lime Pie…or Dorito's.

Separate them immediately. They are plotting against you. Rescued? It was jut a prison transfer. Lock up all the sharp utensils and make sure your insurance it paid up.

We have all seen what a rabbit can do to a mans throught, we have all seen The quest for the holy grail

We have a New Zealand white rabbit which has the personality of a surly plastic lawn gnome. She grunts a fair amount – usually when I'm trying to root her out from under the hutch in order to lock her up.
