So I'm in Home Depot a couple weeks back and see a poster, "Valentine's Day Dozen Roses" for some reasonable price, $25 USD or something. I'm like, hmmm, very interesting, maybe I'll remember that. So the day before Valentine's Day, I'm working from home. That particular Home Depot was near my work, on the other side of town. It's pouring rain and traffic is backed up everywhere, so I check the online ad for the nearest Home Depot. Nothing about roses or cut flowers at all. Darn, it must be a special only at that particular one. I know, I'll try THE UPSCALE FLOWER SHOP (not its real name) that's a few blocks from our house, the one on the trendy shopping street that has a restaurant attached (though that's closed now). They'll have quality flowers for sure and so what if they're a little more, my honey is worth it. I go there, they've got a canopy set up in the back parking lot for extra prep tables, with three workers doing nothing but wrap dozens of long stemmed roses. "How much is a dozen roses?" "One Hundred Fifty Dollars." "Wow." "Yeah. You might want to try these tulips here, they really last a long time." I don't even ask the price, just thank them and walk out. What the heck, I go to the Home Depot in my area. There they are, right in the front, bundles of 12 roses, in water, fresh, for $18. USD Score! I successfully hide them (in the garage in water) so they're a surprise on Valentine's Day morning. My wife says how beautiful they are about 5 times. This is a good sign -- if she was saying it for politeness, it would be only 1 or 2 times. So over breakfast I tell the above story. When I get to the "my honey is worth it" part she says "thank you etc". When I get to the "One Hundred Fifty Dollars" she just goes silent. When I tell her I got them at Home Depot for "a lot less" she says "Thank you so much for not spending the Hundred Fifty Dollars on me." Double score! |

Good job! Women like flowers, but they also like a man who recognizes that $150 USD is Too Much for something that will die in a week. |

Michael never gives me kitty salad. I wonder why? ;) Which reminds me, I haven't given him his present yet. |

picture "Flowers are pretty. Candy is sweet. Your bon mots are witty But figs can't be beat." Game materials tend to be non-caloric and hypo-allergenic. They have an edge over candy, flowers and jewelry. (Just as TMP'ers are preferable to lesser mortals.) Happy Valentine's Day to you all and extra hugs to terrain_sherlock. As the zombie said to the mad scientist: "I love you for your brain
your juicy,delicious brain

Men buy their wives flowers? What a waste. I took my BH to a gun show and bought her a new 9 mm that fits in her purse. She loves it. |

I bought my wife a dozen roses – and let her pick them out. We were at Costco and we had a little fun deciding between the antique roses, the brighter colors or the traditional ones. I ended up getting her white roses and another 18 flowers for about $30. USD Nearly a week later, they're still bright and fragrant. Gotta love Costco. Last year, for Mothers Day, I got her two live rose bushes – one a "Purple Tiger" (combines her favorite color and her childhood nickname) and the other "Sterling Silver" which were the roses we used in our wedding. I drove my sweetiepie to the airport on Valentine's day, so's she can be at her mom's funeral on Wednesday (she passed on Friday the Thirteenth; how cool is that? I mean you gotta go sometime, so why not then?) Now the best present I can give my wife is to show up for the funeral myself. I am still looking for, praying, hoping for a really good excuse to not get on that plane tomorrow! And I don't do "flower and candy" holidays; why should the rest of the world celebrate some RCC dude's holy day anyway? Even Mormons are weird that way, remembering a bunch of florists/confectioners "holidays", all because some angry mob offed a religious extremist centuries ago, sheesh
