My son's 2-year-old gray tabby Baldr, is generally a puppy in cat's clothing. He's a relatively small cat – about 4 pounds, who loves getting pet, licking faces and playtime.

He also gets bored.

Usually when this happens, he'll announce it loudly and then jump on a desk or my workspace. When he does the latter, he'll stay perfectly still until I pluck him off the surface and give him scritches.

This is also the cat that doesn't mind water.

He's come up from the pond soaking wet more times than I can count. Most of the time, he's been swatting at gnats or the like and winds up in the drink. He is quite fond of bringing up fishing lures and pond scum as trophies. He's also managed to bring up a few fingerlings. On Tuesday, however, he brought up a 6" bluegill (perch) and loudly announced his accomplishment. Today, he comes up from the lake – in a rain storm no less – with a coot in his mouth. The bird was as big as he was – and probably about 8 ounces lighter. I had to draw the line when he wanted to bring it in the house.

Personally, I think he's jealous of his sister, Athena. She has an impressive kill record against the local rats and I suspected that he wanted to show off.

Cats are amazing, Baldr may have found his niche in life. Some cats are good at catching rats and others are good at catching er fish. I believe it was in National Geographic that I read this, that cats are very adaptable and one of the cats they were studying was adept at catching bats.

I saw a National Geographic article some years ago about bats that caught fish.
So, the circle is complete.

We had another cat who was pretty good at catching bats – and humming birds.

The funny thing is that Baldr is normally a few clowns short of a circus – his sister has the brains. But every now and again, he gets these flashes of true brilliance.

But can fish catch bats?
