Standard Disclaimer applies…

It's been kind of quiet in "the tech geek" world that I work in now. No vampires, or whiny goth chicks. The two that are in my dept don't seem to either drink coffee, or are never around…hmmmm….
We hired five new people last month and two of them are gone already….
Our company is starting NEW people out with a "mid twenties" per hour salary range…and for some strange reason the folks that have left are all UNDER 23 years of age. They all seem to have this problem about "showing up to work on time", or better yet…"showing up at all…"
We're pretty easy on calling in, etc…the basic deal is…"Just let someone know what's going on…" and for some strange reason they can't seem to do that…or won't do it. They can't be bothered with calling to say "I'm going to be 10 minutes late to work."…Nope…too much effort…
I'm not sure what they are thinking, (if they are). Jobs aren't the easiest things to come by and the pay is pretty darn good, so I hope and wish for them the best.

And on the other front….
We have a "Cultural and Diversity Ambassador" on our floor now…and next week he wants our department to do "Some teambuilding exercises"….

The moment I heard this, something in the back of my mind said "Sharpen up your resume…"

And more to come…I can feel it….

Hummmmmmm. But what about the Italians???

Micman Supporting Member of TMP13 Jan 2009 10:37 p.m. PST

Just when you thought is was safe to go to work…..

Oh and the ones that "quit" are idiots. I would love to get a mid twenties job. Heck they would have to pry me off the door to get rid of me.

Good luck with the Cultural and Diversity Ambassador. I am sure they mean well. :)

Well Murphy, I think these days you could make a case for minority status for yourself with the C&D Ambassador. After all, your species of worker is just about extinct. Now go out and harass two Goth chicks and call me in the morning.

Alxbates14 Jan 2009 3:43 a.m. PST

How much you wanna bet the Cultural and Diversity ambassador will represent everyone in the world except people who look like you?

I sense potential for some good stories!

Hope you don't have to dodge any bullets…

Just say "no, I have never heard of solzanitsan" (sp) It worked back in the 70s in a land far far away.

Ah, Murphy, what do you have to fear ?

As Phat D'adee's representative from Bongolesia, you
should embrace the new 'Cultural and Diversity
Ambassador.'

Heck, you might even spring for a ticket to Bongolesia,
one-way, of course…

Murph,
If you are over 40 you are also a protected species. Don't forget to play the elderly card as necessary.

What is on time? I roll out of bed at 9:00 to be at work by 10:30. Would that be late?

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP14 Jan 2009 10:32 a.m. PST

Yep, keep the resume updated. "D & C ambassador" (are toleration and politeness now a foreign country?) and "team building" are deadly phrases.

Another deadly phrase

"Hi, I'm from Corporate and I'm here to help!"

Sadly, my current position as an employee and labor relations manager means that I spend a lot of time disciplining and firing people. It's amazing what these new grads (and I'm only 35, so I'm not an old fart or anything) perceive as their responsibility to the company versus our responsibility to them.

I even fired one Hispanic female, right out of college, after a week. She was 60 to 90 minutes late every day, and when we confronted her about it, her answer was that, 1) as a Hispanic, her cultural background does not place the same emphasis on deadlines and times as Caucasians do, and that, 2) in college they were more enlightened and didn't worry about mundane things like timekeeping, and she felt that this was the more adult approach.

Oh, man. After I retrieved my putty knife and scraped her manager off the ceiling, we fired her on the spot. And then she had the affrontery to file an EEO complaint!

I'd have said, "okay, fine," – then told accounting to hold her paychecks for a few weeks!

Maybe this is why I'd never make it in Human Resources…

The Nigerian Lead Minister15 Jan 2009 2:19 p.m. PST

That's amazing to me. Where I work, if you are more than 30 min late for your shift, you can't even get past security. You get two tardies a year, after that we start cranking down the discipline. A week of being late (or not even getting in the door) and you're gone!

CLDISME15 Jan 2009 3:15 p.m. PST

The matter of time/punctuality is also an issue of expectations. My aunt, and probably like nycjadie above, is expected to perform all of her duties within a 40 work week or extra if necessary, but her office is not time dependant so her arrival and departure times vary.

I, on the other hand, also have to perform my duties in that 40 hour work week, but I am expected to arrive and depart at specific times.

If these expectations are not spelled out at the time of hire, then the employer cannot complain.

We need more Goth Chicks……..

christot17 Jan 2009 2:18 p.m. PST

Our resident Goth chick (big fringe, long red hair, a few self-harming scars, "sh&t on her face" -to quote "Pulp-Fiction")is the most hard-arsed person in the office- she's the one who bosses us (her theoretical superiors), keeps us in line, where are we, gives us hell over reciepts and expenses, I love her.

Did you remind her that "When in Rome…"

MY university proffessors were not that 'enlightened' about being a mere five minutes late to class.

Micman

Yeah, they'd have to pry the mouse out of my cold, dead hand at that rate of pay.
