I've been under the dark cloud of looming unemployment since before Thanksgiving. Well, today my employer finally announced our staff reductions and reorganization. 25% of our employees are gone. Good news – I still have a job! Bad news – several of my friends and co-workers are out of a job in a tough economy. I hope other TMPers are okay for 2009.

Glad to hear you are OK – and hope your friends land on their feet.

My company has been eliminating jobs for more than a year. When jobs get cut, employees excercise their seniority to bump other employees with less seniority and so on… Well the line of furloughed employees is about 3 names under me and they just cut another 9 jobs. So I expect to be looking for another job by the end of the week.

That's what's happening to me carne, although the union is also "fudging" some seniority dates. My last day will be Feb. 28. Hope your search goes better than mine has.

Congraulations! It's hard to find and maintain worthwhile employment these days.

I'll be retiring at the end of the month, one of the other managers is also retiring. Yesterday upper management announced who our replacements will be. They will be making lateral transfers and the company won't be backfilling their jobs.

I've survived until the next fiscal year. We'll see once the next budgeting cycle comes around.

Congrats from one who still has a dark cloud looming :)

We're on a rolling reduction. Every year they announce more cuts, and reorganize and shuffle. So far so good, but I'm planning on bailing after this year so a severance package would not be unwelcome.

Congrats. We just merged/had a buyout, and large numbers of redundant corporate staff got the axe. I feel pretty secure, as I'm a line supervisor in production, and the go-to guy for a lot of issues. However, there is always the uncertainty….

I'm still on hold while my customer gets their budget together so it's looking like a month and a half with no money for me. My wife, who makes more (normally) has been out since November. We're hoping its not another 60 days without a paycheck or things get very, very, ugly.

For the last 4 months I have had a dark cloud hovering inches above my head.

This morning I was told I was safe, and would get a years employment contract.

At noon today it was announced our company was being sold, though "efforts would be made to keep current employees".

So now I have to start looking again!

The seniority thing is a two edged sword. A company I worked for did some down-sizing, the whack list was composed of the most senior people in their position. The thinking was they were there longer and made more money. I wish every one luck, nothing causes us stress like not having a job and a family to feed.
