I don't know what's sillier – the concept of Knighthood, or giving them away in a popularity contest. -Kle. |

I'm not sure its a popularity contest. Its not like there were nominees and a vote. And I think its cool that a society has a non-commercial, non-monetary way to recognize people's contributions. No awards dinner, no magazine cover, no "hey look at me," just an official acknowledgement. Andrew |

Well deserved that man! Time for a couple of choruses of the Hedgehog song. |

The trouble is he is now a knight- what happens if Vetinarii sends him a note that says "Terrence Pratchett- Knight"? 1st plane to Iraq? I like the honours system (not always the use it's put to though) – Gives a public recognition to all sorts of people (not just the famous- I had a boss who got one for 40 years service to her employer). |

I'm not sure its a popularity contest. Its not like there were nominees and a vote. It's based upon his popularity as an author, just like Elton John's is based upon his popularity as a musician. He hasn't done anything especially remarkable, he just writes entertaining, sort of repetitious comedy. Don't get me wrong, he's contributed more to civilization that I have, certainly. And I think its cool that a society has a non-commercial, non-monetary way to recognize people's contributions. I guess. The lower orders of Knighthood seem to demean the higher ones, to me. Sort of like if the US had a second-rate Medal of Honor that it gave out to celebrities. -Kle. |

Well other than bring entertainment to millions worldwide, provide business to book sellers and others in the literary field, encouraged reading and literacy, and now working hard to educate the public and campaign for better dementia care and treatment, not very much at all really. In the same way that Elton Johns was about his services to the British recording industyr, music industry and his chairty work. |
