Any suggestions places to visit. I will only have a couple of hours, at most. I have visited the pyramids, the sphinx and the Cairo museum. I am interested in modern stuff. A museum with plenty of tanks would be ideal. |

The military museum is, sadly, disappointing. Many rooms are closed and unlit and many exhibits are only models. They do have nice wooden models of siege equipment and some dioramas. The ancient period is surprisingly poorly covered, the middle ages somewhat better, and modern times predominate. Outside it are two excellent sculptures, one equestrian, and a lane with some XX century equipment, armoured vehicles, airplanes, torpedoes and such. Besides the Military museum there are two more museums in the fort. One is only one room with several firetrucks and another is the Police museum. It has some medieval grenades, some shields and helmets, and the rest is not interesting. The fortress is nice, though small, and the view from it is interesting. I have heard that somewhere in Cairo stands a Panorama of the crossing of the canal, but after the troubles of trying to explain to the taxi drivers that I wanted to go to the fort in many languages, including Arabic of my own invention, I did not even try to find it. The zoo is sad, and the botanical garden beside it just a nice park. Apart from getting lost I did not see much more during my short stay. Only an Armenian church with beautiful frescoes and a friendly and pleasant nationalistic priest who urged me to war. Have fun! I envy you. I would revisit the National Museum, it is worth it. |

You may need to get a visa. IIRC you need to have $100 USD or maybe $1,000 USD in cash to get this -- sorry don't remember exactly. Not a bribe but you have to show it to them. Guess they want to make sure you can support yourself. The museums are in a lot of flux as they are upgrading / moving a lot of stuff. No telling what you will see when you get there. mjc |

Cairo was one big dusty traffic jam. The miitary museum was as Nikola described. However a couple of river crossing ferries and it was interesting to see how small JS3 is compared to a Centurion. On the way out the security was odd, my passport was checked nine times but I carried several bottles of water through all the checks onto the plane. |
