Wow. I still remember wasting tons of hours on it. Yet after 15 years, we are only up to Doom 3, and one really bad film

Ahh, but there have been further premutations of other ID franchises; Hexen Castle Wolfenstein ( and maybe another one or two that I can't remember ) ID makes sure that they get some milage out of their newest and greatest 'engines'. |

I remember when the Doom shareware version was first released. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen computer-wise, up to that point. Fifteen years? Wow. |

I still play it through once in a while
along with the sequels up to 3 (never tried it)
the game play still holds up really well. Same for original Quake
things in there that still make me jump. |

Doc – Castle Wolfenstein came first, Return to Castle Wolfenstein came out later. Doom followed the original Castle Wolfenstein and really took it further and led to the genre of games we call FPS. Like Dune/Dune 2 more so started the RTS genre. More or less. |

IN the mid 90s when I was a single parent, I had Doom 2 on the 5 computers in the call centre I ran. After hours, my friends and I would go into my building at the university and yell and scream at each other for hours on end while playing deathmatch. Often I'd bring my young children in with colouring books to occupy them while dad killed his friends on the computer. As it would sometimes go late into the night, they sometimes preferred just to curl up on the comfy seats and go to sleep. One day, the head of security called me to his office – we both worked in the same university facilities department. He told me that some of the night guards had reported that they had seen me and several adults coming into the building with young children with blankets and pillows after hours. The security chief looked rather concerned, but was relieved when I burst out laughing and explained what was going on and it was not what the guards were afraid of. -- Tim |

For the "not being able to see" thang in Doom3, go get the "duct tape" patch. This allows you to duct tape yer flashlight to yer gun
Makes the game better
