OK, I know this is an old, OLD game, but I used to play a text based MUD back in my freshman year of college (15 years ago…), and this is so fun and remniscent of it that I'm hooked.

Can't seem to get past the gnome mines, though – I start to get impatient and move too quickly. I'm not a big fan of the lack of identify scrolls and the permadeath – although that's kind of the appeal, too…

Any other nethack fans out here on TMP? There's about a million pages of Nethack references online, and I don't know where to start.

I played nethack a lot 10 years ago -- surely it can't have been that long!!!! I also reinstalled it quite recently.

Gnomish mines are a branch, I often go down the main dungeon for a few more levels, then go back up to the mines. Also depending on your alignment or race the mines can be tougher or not.

Valkarie is a good starting character -- pretty tough and good equipment.

You can easily make copies of your save file, which can help whole games being destroyed by a silly mistake.

I too find it too easy to think of nethack as real time -- but it is turn based so you can always wait and think and check your inventory.

I can't even remember how long ago I played.

All I remember was taking an elevator waaaaay lower than I belonged hoping for a uick hit (or kill) on something that gave me XP (EP?)

Unless I'm confusing it with something else?

I had some fun with Hack in the 1980s, but got bored and never tried NetHack.

I've not played NetHack, but I'm a big fan of Angband/Moria.
