It looks likely that I sahll be in Manhatten for a couple of weeks at the start of December. It's for work, and it is liable to be very intense, but I may be able to escape to shop (my PM has her own shopping list, and some sense of fairness). So, aside from the compleate strategist where might I find miniatures – specificaly 1:144 prepaints such as I might find in a wal-mart if their were wal-marts in Manhatten? Aside from strand books, what are the spectacular used and remainder bookstores? I have been to New York, although it was 25 years ago. Thanks! |

Not really much in the way of miniatures in New York. There's a store called Neutral Ground, but I haven't been there since before 9/11. There's a GW store on 8th street. In midtown there are a couple of railroad shops I frequent for terrain supplies. There's a famous vintage toy soldier shop on the West Side, but I've never visited. As far as bookstores, nothing beats the Strand. Most other used bookstores in Manhattan are specialty shops (cooking, mysteries, etc.). New bookstores are quite big (Borders, B&N). There's also a Strand near Wall Street downtown that has less selection but is less picked over. Everyone goes to the Strand. I'll be there Saturday selling books! The good hobby shop here closed a few years ago and there is no WalMart in the near vicinity. I do my shopping at these places when I get out of town (as does my wife at sewing shops), usually on our weekend trips to the in-laws. I spend most of my budget at Historicon on supplies and miniatures. There's nothing like seeing the stuff in the flesh. If you're in midtown, perhaps we can schedule a lunch. Steve |

You *might* be able to find some pre-paints in the Toys R Us in Times Square. I don't think there are many (any?) in the city. You wold have to venture out to Long Island or into NJ. (and it's ManhattAn) |

"If you're in midtown, perhaps we can schedule a lunch." I'd like to give it a try; fire me an e-mail at les_howie (at) yahoo.com The customer site is on Wall street, and I have no blessed idea what the shedule will be like except we have reserved an hour for lunch in between workshops. And ManhattAn it is!

I'll e-mail you Lentulus, but downtown will be all but impossible for me to do lunch. It's a great time to visit NY. |
