Are the 747 firefighting planes being utilised to fight the wildfires in SoCal? If not why not? Just wodering Salut y'all!

I don't think so. The bigger planes contract with the Forest Service and with individual states, counties, and cities for periods of service. The Forest Service contract for DC-10 firefighting planes stationed close by here in Victorville expired last month; I'm not sure if they were extended. Some cities had been looking at contracting to have other big water bombers like the Mars seaplane available for the 2009 season, but I don't think anything was in place. One was in NorCal earlier this year:

Smaller aircraft like this Bombardier get a lot of use; they can rapidly turn around after scooping a refill in lakes and reservoirs:

LA County Fire contracts a pair of Bombardiers each year during the Santa Ana season from Ontario.

A lot of the work is in small canyons with steep hillsides. The smaller tankers, up to C-130 size, are better suited for this environment:

They and the large helicopters can make precise drops in areas that the larger tankers would have a hard time reaching.

The DC-10 tanker was in use over Brea, Diamond Bar and elsewhere. It made drops at the Sylmar fire as well.

Not only was the local news absolutely full of shots of the bird making its runs, but I could see it from my place as it moved into position.

Here's one video: link

I have not seen the 747 in action – I'm not sure if Evergreen's bird got certification or not.

Wyatt that was cool, I have not really watched the news and had not seen that puppy in action. That was a large load of fire retardant
