Well, it would appear that my 42-year-record of having avoided surgery of any type is coming to an end today. After a couple days of thinking that I'd improbably pulled an abdomenal muscle, I went in to the doctor's and it turns out that I have a hernia. How that happened is undetermined.

So, I'm off to my appointment within the hour and we'll see how involved a procedure that turns out to be.

Special.

Bummer, but at least you didn't wait until you strangulated something important before going to the doctor. Here's to a quick repair and rapid recovery.

Be prepared for some cosmetic shock down there. My surgeon burst out laughing when I called about the color purple. Something called lividity! Otherwise, a relatievly easy procedure.

Well, that was an interesting day. The doctor managed to fix part of it in the office – I hadn't noticed that my navel had become an "outie" on some level. He referred me to a surgeon and I'm scheduled to go in first thing Monday for a "quick" laproscopic operation where they will put things aright and install a mesh. Now, considering that I haven't even had stitches in my life, this is a definite change.

What struck me as interesting is that the level of pain as a result of the surgery will be less than what I'm going through right now. I didn't think I had a high pain threshold… They've prescribed this stuff called "Norco" which is a relative of Vicodin. Given that Nyquil can cause some interesting dreams, I'm slightly afraid that I'll know what purple tastes like after one dose.

The good news is that they've told me to go about my regular life after I get out of recovery and come home. But, no heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks. My son won't enjoy this as that'll become his job.

The bad news is that you may get some interesting posts here while I'm playing with chemistry.

Good luck and fast recovery. Vicodin does a great job for me, though I can't really detect any change ins sleepiness or the like.

Good luck with it. Those small intestines can be quite inquisitive in the event of a hernia. There was one case here where a guy had his come out, look around and see a new spot they would like to check out.

It was the man's scrotum. He ended up with something like 8 feet of small intestine in there, they were down past his knee when he thought something might be wrong and headed to the doctor.

I had a hernia repaired many years ago and my post operative suggestion is to avoid anything which might make you laugh for a few days after the surgery. I was watching a comedy show and started laughing. This quickly reminded me that nearly every sinew in my body was somehow attached to my gut. Good luck with the surgery and do be mindful on the "no heavy lifting" rejoinder. Like I said, you'd be surprised at how mnay things are connected to the muscles in the belly.

After talking to my father, I found that this particular hernia is congenital as he and at least one of his brothers have had the same surgery in the 40-45 year-old range.

What really horks me off is that I'm not going to be able to head out to New York next week. I was going to New Jersey and meet up with a friend and we were to stop by another friend's house in order to see the Sdkfz 222 replica he'd built on an M715 chassis.

Hmm. Looks like I'll have to turn off the "Humor" area of interest for a while grin if I can't laugh. On the other hand, I'm not sure where I'll post my first post-op message while still coming down from the anesthesia.

Sorry to hear about the hernia – here's to no complications and a speedy recovery!

mad monkey 125 Oct 2008 7:06 p.m. PST

Good luck. Surgery's nothing, it's the recovery time that sucketh. No laughing, coughing, or lugging stuff. Coughing will hurt. Take the pain pills and enjoy the 60's. ;)

Hope you'll be OK soon. I had to go in the ER for something last March, and ended up spending 5 days in the hospital, mostly during a weekend. Missed a local gaming con due to this.
