The plural of KV1 is not KV1's, but KV1s.

The plural of V-1 is not V-1's, but V-1s.

The plural of T34 is not T34's but T34s.

The plural of ATV or APC is not ATV's or APC's, but ATVs and APCs.

The apostrophe in the above examples shows singular possessive, not plural.

Hyphen placement… that's another story. grin

I am John the OFM, TMP Grammer, and, Speling Facscist™ (triple sic), and I have come out of retirement to approve this message.

How have you been, GaSF? Been quiet around here of late.

Where have I been? Cowering in terror lest my typos be held against me.

aecurtis Fezian19 Oct 2008 9:41 a.m. PST

Triple sic is good in a marguerita.

Isnt it about time that these crankey old folk's stop there complaining about nit-noid thigs like possesive's and plurel's and whethere its WWII or WW2?

The Big One.

And carbon in landfills.

Neotacha19 Oct 2008 10:05 a.m. PST

Lotta organic stuff in landfills. Of course there'll be carbon.

Apostrophe also indicates some sort of contraction, dude.

Eewww. Did I just type 'dude'? Must avoid students!

I for one am shocked to see the spelling and grammer facsist start a sentence with "And"….

aecurtis Fezian19 Oct 2008 11:24 a.m. PST

However, it may be correctly used when forming the construction:

"And another thing: … "

Also, it's the '80s, not the 80's (acually it's the '00s right now, but I trust that the example is clear).

I for one am shocked to see the spelling and grammer facsist start a sentence with "And"….

There is nothing grammatically wrong with starting a sentence with 'And'. There is a long and distinguished history of that usage, starting, I think, with "And in the beginning…"

PS. When posting about grammar, always proofread twice before posting.

And Spurs lose again.

This is 'lose' again, not 'loose' again…

Whatisitgood4atwork20 Oct 2008 1:04 a.m. PST

You are one of the few who seem to know the difference Garrison.

AndrewGPaul20 Oct 2008 3:15 a.m. PST

whether its WWII or WW2

I've seen you post about this before, Allen. Is this really something with a right and wrong answer? I fail to see how one can be better than the other, apart from the reader's preference for Roman numerals.

The sixth Lenin.

Half a smartie for whomever gets it.

This is 'lose' again, not 'loose' again…

If they were 'loosing' at a lot of games, the janitors and groundskeepers would probably be rather upset…

"Is this really something with a right and wrong answer?"

You can look it up.

Right now, it is WWII, but give it long enough and historians will adopt WW2 in order to avoid confusion with WW11.

Grinning Norm21 Oct 2008 5:54 a.m. PST

Right answer: you don't make yourself look stupid.
Wrong answer: you do.

Pick one.

I wonder if anyone can tell me what the hell this one thinks it's doing:

It's not denoting possession, and it isn't replacing omitted letters. Do apostrophes have other powers I don't know about?

Arteis12 Feb 2009 12:09 a.m. PST

Using or not using the apostrophe after numerals or initials is not a rule – it is a fashion. In the 1960s it was fashionable to say write "1960's", now it is not.

Many aspects of language are fashion rather than rules.

Last Hussar22 Feb 2009 5:15 p.m. PST

Plynkes- I have trouble with initials and acronyms- I want to type it, even though I know logically it shouldn't. But then was English ever logical?
