What to do , what to do ? Got the armoury and the resistance museum pencilled in. What are the "best" castles / palaces ? Is it worth making trips out to, say Roskilde, or given the time will Copenhagen be overwhelming enough on it's own ? Whilst I'd love to know about all the model and wargaming shops my family would (quite rightly) kill me if I actually spent any time in them
.. Tack ! |

I'm thinking of visiting the fortified islands – worth it ? All 3 ? One better than the others ?? Tack ! |

Two things worth knowing about Denmark (Copenhagen), it's small and it's expensive. Kronborg castle in Helsingor is worth a visit, it's a round trip of about two hours by either car or train, depending on time of day, of course. The Viking ship museum in Roskilde is also worth a visit, if you like that kind of thing and is the same sort of distance as Helsingor. Having never been to the islands, I can't really say about them. Svend Erik, Denmark Oh, and by the way it's "tak" |

Thanks, and also sorry – it's Tack in Sweden. Hopefully they sound the same as it's about the only word I thought I knew

Roskilde is well worth the trip if you have any interest in the Viking age. I would recommend using the train. Off the military theme there is a church in Copenhagen where you can climb the stairs inside the tower, then go out and climb the spiral staircase round the outside of the spire. The views are fantastic. Helsingor is pretty cool and you can see Sweden quite clearly from there. |

if you only have 48 hours and are historically interested i would say you should visit the armoury, and nearby is the national museum, (which is free) where the new prehistoric section has just opened, which covers up to viking age. then i would recommend rosenborg which is a 16th century castle in the middle of town. Complete with all the furniture and crown jewels. close by is the lifeguard museum. Kronborg and Roskilde is both a day trip. |

Thanks for the advice – Probably go for 1 day just in Copenhagen centre, and depending how much we've seen think about a trip out to the viking ship museum – would love to see that. I'll let you know how it went. |

Ok – Copenhagen is a great city. Use the water bus to get around the harbour area – cheap & frequent – takes you up to the Danish resistance museum as well as The mermaid statue ! Also a large star fortifcation. The National museum – prehistory exhibition is stunning. Got my ship fix here. The Arsenal – fabulous museum, wonderful artillery pieces from 1400's to today. Upstairs pistol & rifle collection is overwhelming ! Next time – get to the resistance musemum when it is open, get to the naval museum, get on the 2 naval vessels that are moored near the opera but are now museums. Tivoli is actually pretty cool (I was surprised !) The church with the exterior spiral staircase is being repaired, tower reopens in 2009. Did go up the Round Tower, which was also good, and a nice place to grab a coffee (in the art gallery half way up). |
