Comments or corrections?

I just heard "gender realignment" on BBC radio a few weeks back. Then last week it was "gender reorientation" on TV.

So is "sex change" obsolete or do they mean something subtly different?

I thought it was "gender reassignment".

I've heard it as "gender reassignment" which sounds far too much like some official is making the decision for you. Gender realignment does sound more like correcting an error.

It's too hard to keep track of. Just goes to show that Orwell really knew his stuff.

Orwell, yes… and the fellow who wrote _The Medium Is

Marshall McLuhan

'Global Village' is one of his too

…but I fail to see the point of the quote in this context?

The transgender community has been working for years to separate 'gender' from 'sex'.

Their primary claim is that the first term applies to how one is viewed by others while the second term applies to partner preference.

So yes, 'sex change' is obsolete.

So is "sex change" obsolete…?

And inaccurate. The operation(s) for the most part only change physical appearance.

The person who is having the operation already feels they are of another gender, so the operation is intended to make them appear more like the gender they associate themselves with.

Or, if you define gender biologically (i.e., DNA), it has no effect on biological gender.

"Or, if you define gender biologically (i.e., DNA), it has no effect on biological gender."

Actually I define gender by plumbing. If when the operation is over you still don't have a uterus, then you are not a female. I have had to ask this question before when arresting people.
