As many TMP members have tons of travel experience under their collective belts, I'll ask if anyone of you has been to Rumania or Moldova and if there's any really interesting to see or anything I should absolutely know before heading that way. (Well, at the moment it's just a plan, but it shouldn't be that difficult getting there, so not too much planning needed, right?) So, any thoughts? Thanks! |

Watch out for that semi-autonomous region on the Moldova border; kind of like Port Royal, but not as light-hearted. -Kle. |

Here's what I (as a US traveler) would consider standard pre-trip info: link link Note that the US doesn't list Transnistris separately. Check with your own Ministry for Foreign Affairs/Foreign Office/State Department for travel advisories, embassy contact info, and other basic data. Allen |

Well, Transnistria would be the prime attraction there – the rest comes with the package, as you can't really get there directly (and the Ukraine seems more of a hassle to me). But Transnistria being what it is, rather unknown to the western world, it might be useful to have a backup plan in the form of walking the gringo trail of Rumania. |

There is a Naval Museum in Constanta. Not that impressive but there used to be a couple of fast attack boats in a swimming pool. picture

Where are you going to be? Brasov and the Black Church is nice and I was able to see one of the Painted Monastaries on the way, along with a glimpse of Ploesti. Vlad Dracul's castle (Bran Castle -- it's not really Vlad's, but whatever) doesn't disappoint. But Peles Castle is the best -- there's a nice collection of old weapons and the castle itself is just gorgeous. |

Well, given the short time I'll be there, I'll probably centre the trip on Moldavia and Transnistria, with maybe a day or two in Bucharest. Isn't the Dracul's castle a bit further out? |

Thanks all, didn't go to the places mentioned, really..well, saw Transnistria, one crazy place, though I think it's also a place one would need to live in for a while to truly appreciate it's strangeness, though that would be a rather impossible feat. |
